It’s not enough to be good at mathematics in order to teach the subject. So, you’ll not only hone your skills in mathematical concepts and applications, but you’ll also acquire a solid foundation in educational methods, learning and development, and instructional technologies.

Our Secondary Education degree prepares candidates to work in the general education classroom at the middle and high school levels. Instructors carefully structure and coordinate field experiences, giving students the opportunity to practice several teaching methods that will prepare them for a successful student teaching experience and career. A signature part of the Secondary Education program at Loras is the Professional Development School (PDS). Each Loras student will participate in diverse field experiences in technology-rich public and private schools.

Our secondary education graduates enjoy rewarding careers at nationally ranked high schools and middle schools. That’s no surprise since our full-time faculty mentors you through a rigorous curriculum and field experience schedule. In the secondary education program, you will have experience planning and teaching lessons in your content area as you complete at least 175 hours of field experience prior to your residency (student teaching). The Illinois State Board of Education recognizes North Central College as fully accredited in art, biology, chemistry, physics, English, history, math, music, and foreign language licensure in Chinese, French, German, and Spanish.

The Education Specialist in School Psychology program will provide you with the theoretical and practical skills needed to be an effect school psychologist. The program emphasizes thorough grounding in best practices and hands-on work with children, training practitioners who are culturally competent service providers.

Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with certification in education. The BA in chemistry with Certification in Education requires 94-95 credit hours. In addition to general chemistry, you will also study analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, instrumental analysis, and physical chemistry. Other important coursework includes math and physics. Additionally, you will take education courses in topics like middle and high school classroom teaching and technology, classroom management, and complete your student teaching assignment at a local school.

Earning a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences with Secondary Education Certification at Lindenwood University The BA in biological sciences with certification in secondary education requires 110 credit hours. You will study plant, animal, and cell biology, genetics, evolution, chemistry, and more. Additionally, you will take education courses in topics like middle and high school classroom teaching and technology, classroom management, and complete your student teaching assignment at a local school.

The Secondary Education concentration is for those who aspire to be middle school or high school English teachers. The secondary education major also has an advisor in the Department of Education and is able to participate in a joint BA/MT (Masters of Teaching) program where the fifth year is completed in the College of Education and Human Development.

In Missouri, middle school certification is defined as grades 5-9. Middle school teachers often work in teams and typically only teach one or two subjects. Middle school certification is specific to a content area. While all middle school majors take education courses, you must also complete courses for the specific subject area you intend to teach.

To fulfill the academic requirements to be certified to teach English at the secondary level (Grades 9-12), students must complete a major in English (with or without a Creative Writing Emphasis). Students should consult with their English and Education advisors to make sure they take courses in fulfillment of their major that also satisfy the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requirements for teacher certification.
