Education Studies at Queen’s explores the multi-disciplinary field of education by critically examining key topics and themes and analysing research-driven insights to ask questions that matter. From concepts and issues to policy and practice, students will examine the fascinating landscape of local and global education through the core underpinning disciplines of psychology, sociology, philosophy, history, and politics.

It’s not enough to be good at mathematics in order to teach the subject. So, you’ll not only hone your skills in mathematical concepts and applications, but you’ll also acquire a solid foundation in educational methods, learning and development, and instructional technologies.

Our Secondary Education degree prepares candidates to work in the general education classroom at the middle and high school levels. Instructors carefully structure and coordinate field experiences, giving students the opportunity to practice several teaching methods that will prepare them for a successful student teaching experience and career. A signature part of the Secondary Education program at Loras is the Professional Development School (PDS). Each Loras student will participate in diverse field experiences in technology-rich public and private schools.

The Secondary Education concentration is for those who aspire to be middle school or high school English teachers. The secondary education major also has an advisor in the Department of Education and is able to participate in a joint BA/MT (Masters of Teaching) program where the fifth year is completed in the College of Education and Human Development.

Our secondary education graduates enjoy rewarding careers at nationally ranked high schools and middle schools. That’s no surprise since our full-time faculty mentors you through a rigorous curriculum and field experience schedule. In the secondary education program, you will have experience planning and teaching lessons in your content area as you complete at least 175 hours of field experience prior to your residency (student teaching). The Illinois State Board of Education recognizes North Central College as fully accredited in art, biology, chemistry, physics, English, history, math, music, and foreign language licensure in Chinese, French, German, and Spanish.

The Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education prepares students to teach in grades seven through twelve. Endorsement options include mathematics, social science, biological science, English, business education, and career and technical education. Special Education and Teaching English as a Second Language are also endorsement options.

The Adolescence Education: English program requires completion of an English major, while simultaneously completing a second major in education, with courses in pedagogy specific to the content that will be taught.
