12 Communication Associate Programs

The Associate in Arts degree is a Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) designed for students who plan to transfer to a university after completing the first two years of study at Peninsula College. The degree is recommended for students who have not yet decided the field they will enter or the university they will attend. It gives students the broad background they need before beginning more specialized, upper-division courses and indicates that a student has completed a two-year liberal arts program.

The Communication Program prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university to obtain a degree in communication or a related social science field.

The Communication Studies program is designed for students interested in studying how humans construct and share meaning. This program allows individuals to become communicators in various social contexts, from interpersonal to debate to public communication. Completion of the Communication Studies: Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) will prepare you to meet minimum lower-division admission requirements (60 transferable units) for transfer to a California State University (CSU). The College of Alameda Communication Department provides courses to help students enhance their personal and professional communication goals. Our classes focus on how people use messages to generate meaning in different contexts, cultures, channels, and media.

Graphic communications is a great career for creatively minded people who also enjoy computers and technology. Though the tools for design have changed from pen and paper to computers and software, ideas and artistic skill are still important. If you are a creative person with technical savvy, this career is for you. After earning the associate degree, students can pursue a number of certificates that focus on areas such as digital photography and digital publishing.

Communication and Media Studies majors will learn the dynamics of communication between and among individuals, groups and cultures, and/or the media. Communication integrates courses in interpersonal, intercultural, organizational and mass communication and public relations. There is a wide range of employment possibilities for students trained in Media Studies in business, sales, public and personnel relations, and advertising. Students can prepare for careers in media news writing and editing, announcing, programming, publicity, community relations, directing and public relations.

The Media Arts and Production program prepares students for employment in small and medium market radio and TV stations as well as corporate communication and public relations offices. Because communication technology personnel must perform a variety of duties, this program stresses versatility. Communication courses offer students experience in live-audience and recorded speaking. Advertising and business courses involve students in other aspects of the communication industry. Audio, video and internet components are meshed with an understanding of the history and theory of development of the message. Students polish their skills by operating WPCD-FM, Parkland’s 10,500-watt educational radio station and filling production crew positions at PCTV, the college’s educational cable access channel.
