The purpose of the BA (Visual Art) Degree is to develop students' creative, imaginative and critical knowledge, skills, and academic research capabilities to practice as artists within the domains of the visual-cultural industries, and/or to engage in postgraduate study in visual art.

The East London Visual Arts and Film program is designed for a new generation of storytellers: artists who share a passion for visual and performing arts across a wide array of media and want to learn by making their own projects in a hands-on, intensive program.

The Bachelor of Arts Honors (Visual Art) prepares students for research-based postgraduate study and entry into the diverse careers in the visual industries, by enabling students to produce creative solutions to complex problems within a specialist area of studio practice; exhibit this work professionally and conduct and report their research under supervision. This is a one-year full-time or two years part-time honors program with both a studio practice stream and a purely theoretical stream, when it is made available.

The MAVA has been designed to ensure that it supports students in developing the required level of competence to exit with research in specialized areas of visual art a master’s qualification. Students conduct practice, photography, video and new media art, environmental art and related theories, art history, theory and criticism, art education, art therapy, and socially engaged art as well as collaborative art practice. Students are expected to investigate complex analytical and practical skills through the writing of a dissertation and/or professional practice through having or curating an exhibition, or engaging in community-based research to advance knowledge appropriate to the research mode.

Audio Visual Design students fuse powerful visual messages through the conceptual and technical blending of sound and motion design. In Master of Visual Arts an appropriate bachelor honours degree in visual arts, or an appropriate postgraduate diploma in visual arts, or a 480 credit bachelor's degree in Visual Arts with a minimum of 96 credits at NQF level 8 or the Advanced University Diploma in Visual Arts with an average of 60%.
