15 Materials Science Preparatory Programs

TCC’s Associate of Science in Materials Science and Manufacturing Engineering Degree is a state-recognized Major Related Program (MRP) designed to provide a pathway for students who plan to transfer to a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering. After completing the degree courses, the student must apply to graduate with the AS MRP degree. Materials Science Engineers design new materials with specific properties, and investigate material failures.

Train for engineering technician jobs specializing in composites manufacturing. Classes introduce students to materials science, composite materials, and engineering design. Gain experience in the hands-on state-of-the-art labs. Job titles of our graduates include test technician, materials technician, composites technician, MDR technician, quality assurance and more. Students who complete the 15 credit composites Certificate of Completion are eligible to apply for Boeing's Blue Streak Mechanic, Composite Manufacturing Technician or Tooling Inspector Apprenticeship programs. Engineering Technology is the powerhouse department that combines training in composites manufacturing and mechatronics. Classes introduce students to materials science, composite materials, engineering design, mechatronics, and automation technology. Gain experience in hands-on state-of-the-art labs equipped with 3D printers, 3D scanners, injection molders, and robotic arms, along with equipment to test, construct, design, and build items both large and small. Capstone projects include fan-powered, radio-controlled robotic cars with printed and composite parts.

The aim of the Materials Science option is to prepare students for research, professional practice, or advanced study in a rapidly advancing interdisciplinary field. The program builds on the core curriculum to develop analytical competence and use it for individualized research, culminating in a one-year senior thesis. Materials Science students develop professional independence, creativity, leadership, and the capacity for continuing professional and intellectual growth.

The Plastics Engineering Technology option in the Advanced Manufacturing Associate of Applied Science program provides training in the plastics industry, including theory and hands-on applications. Students are given practical instruction applicable to materials, processing, and design engineering.

The Civil Engineering Technology program is designed to prepare the graduate for work with a civil engineer, surveyor, contractor, or materials testing laboratory to perform general engineering practices and materials performance evaluations. These may include surveying, designing, drafting, materials testing, and cost estimating construction projects.
