49 Human Services Preparatory Programs

This Foundation Degree aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the wide and varied social, political, and economic environments that community and public services operate within. You will have the opportunity to listen to, and network with, serving public service practitioners and members of other community and public service organizations through visits, volunteering, guest lectures, and work-based delivery.

An education in social and human services can lead you in many interesting directions — from alcohol and chemical dependency counseling to senior services and activities specialist. The job opportunities are endless, helping people of all ages with emotional, mental, physical, and economic difficulties in a wide variety of settings and facilities. The degree programs include supervised work experience at community chemical dependency or human service agencies.

The Associate in Arts in Social Work and Human Services for Transfer is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution as Social Work and Human Services majors. In this program, the students gain exposure to the field of social and human service work. Students who successfully complete the AA-T in Social Work and Human Services earn specific guarantees for transfer to the CSU system: admission to a CSU with junior status and priority admission to a local CSU campus and to a program or major in Social Work and Human Service or a similar major.

TCC's Human Services Professional program prepares students to work as practitioners in social, mental health, and addiction service agencies; and non-profit organizations, schools, and prisons. You’ll learn about human behavior and social problems, and how individuals interact with systems to address these issues. Students will use these skills to help people meet their physical, mental, and emotional needs.

The Human Services (HSERV) program prepares students for employment in a broad range of social service agencies. Typical job titles include substance use disorder treatment professionals, residential treatment workers, case managers, and out-reach and community workers. The program has a core of courses that all students must complete for the Associate in Applied Science Degree, AAS with either a Generalist or Substance Use Disorder Counseling emphasis. By their second quarter, students determine which HSERV emphasis they will pursue.

The social and human services field focuses on improving the lives of others. Under the supervision of social workers, psychologists, sociologists, and other professionals, social and human service providers work to ease and prevent problems caused by poverty, inadequate housing, unemployment, and illness. These professionals work with people in family settings, group settings, and as individuals, primarily providing counseling and life skill lessons.

The Social Work Program provides the student with an introduction to the field of social work and the social welfare system, as well as the human behavior content required of human services workers and social welfare policy analysis skills.

This department offers basic, introductory information that is needed for a student seeking to understand both the social welfare and alcohol and drug abuse counseling systems in the United States and the profession of Social Work and Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling. Occupational titles, depending on educational achievement, of human service workers may include Case Worker, Case Management Aide, Eligibility Counselor, Social Service Aide, Probation Officer, Mental Health Counselor or Crisis Intervention Manager.
