Berkeley City College’s Elementary Teacher Education AA-T is an interdisciplinary program that meets state guidelines in order to prepare students to begin their path toward becoming elementary school teachers. The Elementary Education Associate of Arts for Transfer is designed for students seeking to enter the teaching profession, typically in K-8 settings, and planning to transfer to a four-year university to pursue the Baccalaureate degree in order to meet California state requirements for teaching.

The Associate in Arts (AA) in Liberal Studies degree is offered for the student intending to transfer to San Jose State University and obtain a Bachelors Degree leading toward the career of teaching. The program provides an excellent foundation in general education including the arts, sciences, humanities, and critical thinking. Students completing the degree will have completed the lower general education and will be able to have that series of courses certified at the time of transfer to San Jose State University. The major courses also further enhance the liberal studies emphasis for depth and breadth of study. Students interested in transferring to other California State Universities offering teacher preparation programs should also review the major sheet for an Associate in Arts in Elementary Teacher Education for Transfer (AA-T).

The degree is designed to prepare students for transfer to a four-year university to obtain a bachelor’s degree, while satisfying subject matter coursework for the multiple-subject teaching credential. Completion of the courses in this degree will partially satisfy requirements for California State University integrated and traditional teacher preparation programs.

The Associate in Arts in Elementary Teacher Education for Transfer (AA-T in Elementary Teacher Education) is designed to provide lower-division preparation for Liberal Arts, Liberal Studies, Integrated Teacher Education, or a similar major baccalaureate institution.
