16 Arabic Preparatory Programs

Formerly titled Foundations of Analytics with R. Provides students with the mathematical and practical background required in the field of data analytics. Probability and statistics concepts are reviewed as well as the R tool for statistical computing and graphics. Different types of data are investigated along with data summarization techniques and plotting.

The Arabic program introduces students to the Arabic language and culture. All courses are taught in Arabic and provide intensive work in oral and written expression. The language curriculum can be complemented with courses on the Middle East and North Africa offered by departments such as history, religious studies, and anthropology and with off-campus study program options. Students have opportunities to participate in the weekly Arabic table; interact with the Arabic assistant; and meet many scholars, writers, and government officials from the Middle East.

This fall we will be offering the following language courses at our Jerusalem Campus, and/or Online as indicated under course descriptions: Modern Hebrew (All Levels), Spoken Arabic (All Levels), and Modern Standard Arabic (Levels 1 & III). Modern Hebrew is the majority spoken language in Israel, and one of the country’s two official languages. Arabic is the language of 22 Member States of UNESCO, a language with more than 422 million speakers in the Arab world.

With the growing presence and importance of the Middle East in the global economy, the need for Western workers who are versed in the Arabic language and culture has never been greater. One of the world’s oldest languages, Arabic is one of the most commonly spoken native languages globally and the official language of more than 20 countries.

The Arabic program at Mount Holyoke is a part of the Five College Arabic Language Initiative. The coursework focuses on developing skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking Arabic as well as in Arab culture. The program offers two full years of Arabic instruction. You can pursue advanced studies of Arabic in the Five College Consortium. Students who study Arabic may choose to complete the minor in Arabic listed here or the major in Middle Eastern Studies for which language study is a principal component.

In just 3 weeks, these 30-hour Special Intensive courses will ultimately boost your language skills in English and Arabic. Arabic is the language of a rich and complex cultural heritage, the main language of Islam and the official language of 21 countries. In order to promote cultural literacy, the Arabic Studies Department at Williams stresses complementing classroom instruction with extra-curricular activities such as film screenings, performances, music concerts, a weekly language table, and guest lectures. Likewise, thematic parties with plenty of food introduce students to another important dimension of North African and Middle Eastern cultures.

A Certificate in Arabic program is designed to provide comprehensive language instruction, focusing on proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing Arabic. Typically offered by universities, language institutes, or online platforms, these programs cater to diverse learners, from beginners to advanced students seeking fluency.

Our MSA program is tailored to meet the needs of all students interested in learning or improving Standard Arabic. It provides them with the necessary knowledge and training to acquire a full and clear understanding of the Arabic language system.

Depending on students interest, CMA may be taught utilizing either Arabic or Latin script, though the former is highly recommended to make life easier for daily tasks such as reading signs and getting around.

The Diploma of Classical Languages complements the Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts. Students who enrol in the course will learn the languages in which the Western Tradition was originally articulated and expressed and thus access the texts in their original language, free from the interpretations of translation.
