Offering students a compelling array of perspectives to investigate and assess the ever-shifting worlds of contemporary art, design, and new media art. OCAD University’s MA in Contemporary Art, Design and New Media Art Histories are unique in Canada in its focus on contemporary art, design and media production and theory. In this interdisciplinary program, you’ll engage with contemporary issues and works, while drawing on theoretical frameworks, historical contexts, and creative precedents that have shaped today’s visual and critical landscape. Program facilities are located in the heart of Toronto’s arts and culture district, in close proximity to the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the Design Exchange, the Textile Museum of Canada, the Gardiner Museum, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery.

Students choose to focus on either public relations or new media studies. Study and practice from multiple perspectives: processes, production, composition, design, broadcasting, policy/law, criticism and critique.

The Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media, and Design (IAMD) draws experienced artists and designers from around the world, encouraging them to investigate and produce works that combine art, design, writing, and interdisciplinary academic study to create new forms of visual and social research and creative production. Each student’s primary discipline and chosen emphasis among art, design, or media practice and theoretical inquiry will determine whether the degree earned is an MFA, MDes, or MA. In this program, taught by artists working in the field as media makers, you will learn about film, video, electronics and interactivity, creative coding, performance, installation, animation and sound. Many of our students focus on video production, but the interdisciplinary nature of the program allows you to explore your own creative path in various forms of media. You will learn technical and creative skills you can apply to a variety of media and digital artworks. Many of our students choose to work in video production, but the choice is yours.

Media Arts 11/12 is designed to focus on analyzing and critiquing various forms of media and composing imagery that is both active and reactive. Students will be exploring digital photography, image editing with Photoshop and basic movie-making techniques in an effort to better understand the world of media.

The Cinema and Media Arts (BA) develops students' specialized knowledge and critical understanding of multiple cinema and media studies fields, including genre, authorship, national and transnational cinemas, technologies of the image, and cultural theory. Students research and examine global cinematic practices through the lens of history, visual culture, technology, industry, sexuality, race and aesthetics.

From novels, films, and essays to graphic novels, video games, and digital media, students in Laurentian University’s English Literature, Media, and Writing program read widely, learning how imaginative and persuasive writing convinces us that the worlds it depicts could be real and that the claims it makes are true. Studying in small classes, our students develop the skills necessary to think critically about what they read and watch, becoming practiced in grasping and explaining how different forms of writing convey complex ideas and information in sophisticated ways. Provoked by the real-world questions and problems they encounter in what they read, our students work closely with faculty members to develop and refine their writing skills in diverse media, creating imaginative and research-informed responses to these concerns.
