16 Environmental Toxicology Masters Degree Programs

An increasing number of chemicals is used by society today, which are also released into the environment. Environmental Pollution Management (Ecotoxicology) is concerned with their potential impacts on the ecosystem. It aims to investigate and discover the effects of chemicals on biological systems in order to develop methods for risk management, as well as to predict ecological consequences.

The ECT+ One Health project has been awarded funding for an additional five student cohorts! The Master's Degree in Environmental Toxicology and Contamination (ICBAS and FCUP) provides advanced training in ecotoxicology, ecology, toxicology, chemistry and other areas. It addresses priority topics such as: risk assessment and management (e.g. pollution, climate change) for environmental, animal and human health (One Health);

This programme will appeal to a wide range of students with a science and engineering background. Although focused on environmental applications, you will gain a broad training that will facilitate progression to a diversity of future science and engineering-based careers. The need for experts in environmental analysis and remediation is predicted to increase, making graduates of this programme well placed to take up emerging jobs in companies and organisations requiring this type of expertise.

The Master’s Degree in Sustainable and Environmental Chemistry provides its graduates with complete training in aspects related to sustainability, new sources of energy, and chemical control of the environment, which will prepare them to develop a doctoral thesis or enter businesses from different sectors or public institutions to which they will provide solid knowledge about the adaptation of chemical knowledge to new social demands and laws regarding sustainability in human activity.

The evolution of society has been accompanied by the development of new technologies and products that give rise to a great diversity of contaminants that can be hazardous to public health and ecosystems. For example, the increasing use of chemicals can pose significant risks to human health and the environment at the various stages of the life cycle of these substances (production, storage, use and final destination). The adoption of vast European legislation in this field, which requires the assessment of these risks, and the growing concern about the effects of toxic agents and pollution on ecosystems and human health, leads to the need to train specialists in Ecotoxicology, Toxicology and Risk Analysis. This cycle of studies focuses on the mechanisms of action of contaminants at the sub-cellular and cellular levels, as well as their effects on individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems (Ecotoxicology) and on Human Health (Toxicology). Based on a highly qualified academic staff with vast curriculum in this scientific area, the master's degree in Eco-Toxicology and Risk Analysis establishes bridges between scientific knowledge and its application in decision-making, regulation and environmental management processes.
