9 Urban Development MA Degree Programs

Our two-year, 33-unit MA in Urban and Public Affairs offers a range of graduate seminars on urban studies, politics, and public policy. A 200-hour internship is required, as well as a Capstone Project that synthesizes your research and internship experience on a policy area of your choice.

The Urban and Regional Planning MA will give you the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to practise professionally as a spatial planner in a variety of private, public and third sector/ community contexts. Building on the University of Westminster's experience of delivering postgraduate courses in town planning for more than 80 years, it examines planning across diverse contexts and scales but focuses in particular on planning in, and for, towns, cities, and urban regions in the UK. You'll be taught by qualified and dedicated staff who possess vast industry, research and teaching experience, and moreover, you'll benefit from studying in a genuinely interdisciplinary academic environment with excellent industry links in the heart of one of the most vibrant cities in the world. The course is professionally accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and covers both the ‘spatial’ and ‘specialist’ elements of the RTPI’s requirements for initial planning education. It is designed to accommodate busy schedules and offered for full-time or part-time study at our modern Marylebone campus in central London. The course's main objective is to create critical-minded, well-rounded, and highly employable graduates who can excel in a variety of career environments and possess the skills and competencies necessary for addressing the manifold challenges and opportunities associated with contemporary spatial development and planning. In addition to the MA qualification, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate options are also available, enabling you to access the course at a point that is relevant to your circumstances, achieve credits and leave at a point that specifically meets your needs.

The MA City Design envisions new concepts of city and urban life by placing design speculation at the core of social innovation. City life is undergoing momentous change. New forms of urban development and technologically driven forms of social innovation are transforming the way we live, work, reproduce and take care of the world around us, producing new lines of social solidarity as well as new sites of social conflict. Yet most of the methods used to research and design cities have resisted change, thus limiting our ability to perceive relevant changes and conceive radically different futures.

The uniqueness of this center will be its a priori social science perspective. It will emphasize the role of technological innovation and smart urban practice in improving the economic welfare, democratic participation, and quality of life of urban residents. In this respect, smart cities are conceived as a vehicle for empowering smart citizens, rather than the other way around.

The master's degree in regional and territorial development focuses on the analysis of the issues, problems, contexts, challenges and development potential of regions and territories. This analysis is based on knowledge in this field of study and intervention affecting the economic, social and cultural as well as political, historical and geographical dimensions of development.

The MArch(SEEC) qualification is a one-year full-time program on sustainability and energy studies with a focus on cities, settlements, buildings, and architecture. With a strong focus on the energy and climate change challenge, this multi-disciplinary program aims to arm the graduates with an integrated range of competencies which will make them invaluable role players in decision making concerning the future/sustainability of cities and their built environment.

The program helps practicing planners advance in their careers and provides entry to the profession for students from a wide range of academic disciplines and work experiences.
