40 Social Science LLM Degree Programs

The National Security Law programs the George Washington University Law School highlight our unique strengths: a nationally recognized faculty, a comprehensive curriculum, and access to the extensive Washington, D.C., foreign relations, cybersecurity, and national security law community. While a number of U.S. law schools offer one or two courses in these fields, few others approach the number of courses available at GW Law. Students can choose between receiving an LL.M. in National Security and Cybersecurity Law, an LL.M. in National Security and U.S. Foreign Relations Law, or an MSL in Cybersecurity.

This two-year selective LLM admits international students and may be extended by approval. With strict academic regulations and limited admission, the programme offers rigorous training in human rights and law, preparing graduates for impactful careers in Africa and beyond.

The LLM programme in International Justice provides students with critical insights into the field of international justice. It focuses, in particular, on issues of human rights, equality, and social inclusion in the context of international law. It provides insights into how the international legal order works, and how it seeks to protect vulnerable groups, including minorities, migrants, and people with disabilities. It critiques the applicable legal regimes, and illustrates how these systems operate in practice.

The Law and Technology LLM fosters critical questioning of technological and scientific change, specifically in relation to law. The course also engages with political, social, and ethical questions relating to how law captures and makes use of changes in technology and scientific knowledge. The relationship between law and technology, and the associated ethical questions that emerge within this field, is dynamic, so this course aims to provide you with a space to evaluate current challenges and consider potential regulatory responses.

The LLM specialising in International Humanitarian Law (Coursework) admits up to 10 students yearly. The programme includes core modules, research training, and a mini-dissertation, preparing graduates to advance justice and human rights across diverse global contexts.

LLM specialising in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa admits up to 30 students annually, with scholarships available. Focused on human rights and democratisation in Africa, it offers core modules, research training, and a mini-dissertation, preparing graduates to drive meaningful impact across the continent.

Master of Laws degree by Coursework is awarded once a student has successfully completed courses in research methodology, three 30-credit modules prescribed for the particular programme, the submission of a research proposal and the submission of a mini-dissertation.

This course offers a distinctive and dynamic approach to studying international law, inequalities and justice. You’ll engage with three core subject modules: international human rights law, international criminal law and inequalities and justice.

The programme examines different kinds of legal approaches/techniques for responding to challenges related to the transition to sustainability in a globalized context. It covers both international and European regulatory approaches from different perspectives with the aim of providing a well-rounded and nuanced understanding of the combination of sustainability and human rights. 

The study period may only be extended in an individual case with the approval of the Faculty Postgraduate Committee on recommendation of the relevant head of department, based on good reason shown and if the student has a reasonable prospect of completing the programme in a further year of study.

The programme aims to equip students with advanced and comprehensive knowledge in International Law and Human Rights Law, including the foundational principles of public international law, international and regional human rights regimes, and mechanisms.

The curriculum of the Master of Laws in Comparative Constitutional Law covers issues concerning the development and operation of constitutional government in its broader political, social, historical, regional, and international context. The core curriculum centers on fundamental issues in comparative constitutional law regarding constitution-making and constitutional design, constitutional government (horizontal and vertical separation of powers), and constitutional rights protection in leading, emerging, and declining constitutional democracies around the world.
