Our approach is a communicative one; we emphasize proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in every course. In addition to our focus on communication in the target language, our courses provide students with the strong grammatical base necessary to progress beyond the elementary level. Moreover, as our department name suggests, cultural instruction is a cornerstone of each and every course we teach. Beyond language classes, we also offer courses that focus on world cultures. Outside of the classroom, our department is active in advising various foreign language student groups.

The Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education - English and Language Arts (Online) teaches reading, writing, listening, and comprehension to secondary education students. You will master these ELA skills so that you can implement effective lessons and learning strategies in 4th-12th grade classrooms.

We provide a sequence of composition courses designed to develop and strengthen critical thinking and writing skills that students need to succeed in their college work. We also offer a variety of elective courses in literature, creative writing, and journalism that fulfill Humanities distribution requirements and, in some cases, the Cultural Diversity requirement for the AA degree. MA TESOL Program produces graduates with the skills to train teaching faculty who excel in their roles as educators, creative scholars, and researchers. This program will prepare teachers for a wide variety of positions both in the US and abroad. Our students will be equipped with the specialized knowledge and field skills for teaching English to speakers of other languages. Upon graduation, they will be competent professional educators with demonstrable leadership skills.

The Master’s degree in TESOL (MATESOL) has drawn students from the United States and at least 60 other countries. It has been a part of Saint Michael’s College since 1962.This 4-week, 120-hour summer professional training program covers all essential aspects of English language teaching from a practical classroom perspective. It offers concrete experience with methods and techniques that reflect current principles of communicative language teaching and learning. Graduates of this program receive a Diploma in TESOL and are typically hired by English-language programs in the US and other countries.

Spertus Institute's Master of Arts in Jewish Studies (MAJS) is a sequenced, content-specific program that explores Jewish civilization's evolving nature, the fundamental religious and intellectual outlook of Jews and Judaism, and the contributions of Jewish civilization to human civilization.

The ESL / ALP courses are divided into four levels: Foundations (beginner), Level 1 (low intermediate), Level 2 (intermediate), and Level 3 (advanced). Each level is composed of four courses: Grammar (Parts A and B), Reading, Writing, and Speaking/Listening.

The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing is a low residency graduate program, which requires two weeks of residency every summer in Eastern Oregon and completing online courses and individualized study with MFA faculty the rest of the two-year curriculum.
