About: The Master in Applied English Linguistics at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) trains English philologists to analyze language across levels and genres, applying linguistics, translation, sociolinguistics, intercultural communication and teaching. VMU offers liberal-arts flexibility, English-taught modules, 30 foreign-language courses and international community from nearly 80 countries. It prepares students for research and doctoral study.
Career Outcomes: Graduates work as English language specialists, consultants, translators, interpreters, editors, public discourse developers, providing translation, editing, text creation and language-technology skills. They support cross-cultural cooperation, multilingual policy and social-language projects; with a pedagogy minor they qualify to teach in Lithuania and non-formal language schools.
The Master’s Programme in Applied English Linguistics is designed to train qualified English philologists with a broad profile, who regard language as a complex phenomenon with its intrinsic and distinctive qualities and are able to independently analyse different levels and units of the English language, applying the knowledge of linguistics and translation to the analysis and translation of texts of different genres, registers, styles, and communicative intentions; to critically evaluate and produce such texts, applying creatively the knowledge of linguistics, sociolinguistics, intercultural communication, translation, and language teaching in their professional and scientific activities. Simultaneously, the synthesis of modern theories of comparative linguistics, translation, language learning, and intercultural communication broadens students’ academic and research interests and enables graduates to pursue doctoral studies.
- The developed skills needed to work with specialized texts (business, legal, academic, etc.) and different functional styles and genres;
- Practical skills in using automated translation programs and corpus lexicography;
- Ability to use the acquired knowledge of intercultural research and intercultural communication;
- Ability to apply the acquired research skills in the spheres of translation, English and Lithuanian philology, and cultural studies.

Graduates of the Applied English Linguistics programme can work as English language specialists, consultants, translators, interpreters, editors, and public discourse developers specialising in science, culture, education, language policy, and other fields in public institutions, businesses, and a wide range of national and international organisations that need staff who can provide high-quality translation, editing, and text creation services, apply language technologies, and address issues in cross-cultural cooperation, multilingual contexts, and social sphere related to language use. Regular graduates can work as language teachers in non-formal education language schools, while a completed minor study programme in pedagogy provides a teacher qualification allowing them to work as teachers in Lithuania.
