    English Language Requirements – Summary

    Minimum English level (if English is not your first language):

    • IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5
    • Minimum 5.5 in each component (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking)

    Accepted Alternatives to IELTS

    UWE Bristol accepts a wide range of UK and international English language qualifications as alternatives to IELTS. Accepted tests and equivalent scores are assessed in line with the university’s official English Language Requirements policy

    English Language Exemptions

    Applicants may be exempt from providing an English test if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

    • Completed at least three years of secondary education in an English-speaking country
    • Completed an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma taught in English
    • Completed an IB Diploma in another language with a minimum grade of 5 in an English subject
    • Completed a higher education or professional qualification taught in English
    • Currently working in an English-speaking environment and able to demonstrate professional use of English
    • In some cases, the Duolingo English Test may be accepted (subject to review)
