Key Summary

About : The Medicine and Surgery programme provides students with a comprehensive education in medical sciences. It emphasizes clinical skills, research, and community health. This full-time course prepares graduates for various challenges within the healthcare field, focusing on both practical and theoretical aspects.
Career Outcomes : Graduates can pursue various career paths, such as becoming medical doctors, surgeons, or specialists in healthcare fields. Opportunities may also arise in clinical research, healthcare management, and education sectors, allowing for a broad range of professional practices.

The single-cycle Master’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery is based on a biomedical-psycho-social educational framework. Its goal is to train a medical doctor who possesses excellent operational and interpersonal skills, enabling effective integration into the complex and demanding world of today’s healthcare, including the ability to successfully continue with specialised and ongoing professional training.

The teaching method integrates knowledge and is based on a solid cultural and methodological foundation acquired through the study of pre-clinical basic sciences, upon which the clinical core subjects are built. This instruction is closely linked to early practical medical experience in small groups under the guidance of a tutor, both in hospital settings and in community health contexts, to develop problem-solving skills, clinical competence, and human interaction abilities. A strong interconnection between research, teaching, and clinical practice is considered essential.

The Master’s Degree program comprises a total of 360 university credits (CFU), spread over six years, with at least 60 CFU earned through activities aimed at developing specific professional skills. Attendance at all types of educational activities is mandatory. Practical training under the supervision of specialised personnel is particularly important. The professionalising internship represents the most innovative element of the program.

An innovation regarding the professionalising internship was introduced following Ministerial Decree no. 58 of May 9, 2018, concerning the procedures for the State Exam. The decree moves the evaluative practical internship valid for the State Exam (TPVES) from the post-graduate stage to within the curricular internship provided by the program.

The TPVES, to be completed during the last two years of the course, consists of 15 CFU, which therefore have dual value, divided into three periods of 100 hours/5 CFU each: 5 CFU in the Medical Area, 5 CFU in the Surgical Area, and 5 CFU in General Medicine, completed in a General Practitioner’s office. The General Medicine internship can only be undertaken by sixth-year students. To access the TPVES, students must have passed all exams required by the study plan for the first four years.
