Key Summary
Smart societies will make more intelligent use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to transform cities and improve the quality of life of their inhabitants, produce and distribute energy more efficiently, and solve fundamental health, environmental, and transport challenges.
ICT for Smart Societies is an interdisciplinary MSc degree designed to train the engineers who will lead this smart revolution and shape the societies of the future. After learning core ICT topics, such as machine learning, smart networks, Internet of Things, you will focus on the key ICT applications for smart societies: energy, transport, building design, smart health, and environment.
ICT4SS has an innovative teaching approach with an interdisciplinary profile. An ICT expert and an application domain expert jointly serve as course instructors, ensuring that you will learn both domain-specific knowledge and related ICT tools. In addition, ICT4SS has a learning-by-doing approach, where you will work on several projects developing problem definition and problem-solving skills.
Year 1
- ICT for health
- Programming for IoT applications
- Statistical learning and neural networks
- Crediti liberi del primo anno (view Full curriculum)
- Management and content delivery for Smart Networks: algorithms and modeling
- ICT for geomatics: navigation and maps
- Mobile and sensor networks
- Operational research: theory and applications
Year 2
- ICT for smart mobility
- ICT in building design
- Smart grids
- Interdisciplinary projects
- Thesis (view Full curriculum)
What will you learn?
The program has a multidisciplinary curriculum.
In the first year, you will learn the main ICT tools and methodologies, like computer and data transmission systems, advanced programming techniques, machine learning, techniques for big data analysis and signal processing, mobile and sensor networks, stochastic modeling techniques, and optimization methods.
During the program, you will learn how to use the above ICT tools in many applications:
- Health: you will understand how to use ICT tools for instrumental diagnostic techniques and address the ethical-scientific issues for the care of patients.
- Design of urban structures and buildings: you will learn about the principles of design of buildings and smart cities, the relevant properties of building materials, and their environmental compatibility.
- Environmental protection: you will study remote sensing, positioning, and photogrammetry.
- Transport: you will learn about intelligent transport systems, related legislation, and mobility models.
- Energy: you will learn about energy generation, transport, and distribution.
Your career as an Engineer in ICT for Smart societies starts here. You will be able to find a job in top competitive companies, high-level industrial or public research centers and choose between a variety of career fields:
- Design and development of ICT devices and services - for applications such as cloud computing, big-data analysis, telemedicine, energy distribution, home automation and environmental protection;
- Research and development - for ICT equipment manufacturers, utility companies that manage energy supply networks, information distribution networks, transportation systems, companies operating in the health and environmental sectors as well as universities and public research centers;
- ICT consultant - for companies, government agencies, and other organizations that work in energy, transportation, health, home automation, environmental protection, and many other sectors.
Projects based on the exploitation of ICT technologies to create smarter societies are widespread and ICT jobs are increasingly required also in non-ICT sectors. According to official Almalaurea stats, 94.1% of ICT4SS students are employed in the first year after graduation.
The professors and research groups contributing to the ICT4SS degree are actively involved in both national and international collaborations with top-level companies. These networks are beneficial to students, who can find a lot of opportunities for internships and master theses in companies.
How will you learn it?
You will take part in face-to-face lectures, classroom practicals, and computer and experimental laboratories.
You will be able to test your knowledge about the various application fields through a multidisciplinary project aimed at developing ICT applications.
You will have access to top-level labs in the Departments involved in the degree program, experimenting with a hands-on approach. More than 300 hours are devoted to lab activities on different ICT methodologies: machine learning and deep neural networks, smart networks, programming for IoT, mobile and sensor networks.
At the end of the program, you will have the opportunity to work on your thesis project or do an internship in a company.
