The Department of Geography of the University of the Aegean in Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece, is the first Department of Geography in Greece, officially established in 1989 and launched in 1994-1995. The Department aims to offer a comprehensive program of undergraduate and graduate education in Geography that observes and responds to both international developments in the field and the needs and particularities of the study of spatial problems in Greece and its role in the wider Mediterranean and European territory. The department has a long experience in international and national research projects.

Among its diverse and innovative range of postgraduate programs, the University of the Aegean includes the ISLANDS program, a new international joint research Master’s Programme in collaboration with prestigious institutions like the University of Groningen, the University of Iceland, and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It focuses on the development of knowledge on island particularities and the development of advanced tools, skills, and technology to effectively address and bridge the gap between theory and practice concerning sustainability. By joining this program, students will not only gain invaluable knowledge and experience but also become part of an international network of experts dedicated to creating sustainable solutions for island communities worldwide.

Participants in Erasmus+ projects may need to obtain a visa for staying abroad in the EU Member States and third countries associated with the Programme or third countries not associated with the Programme hosting the activity. It is the responsibility of all the participating organisations to ensure that the authorisations required (short or long-term stay visas or residence permits) are in order before the planned activity takes place. It is strongly recommended that the authorisations are requested from the competent authorities well in advance, since the process may take several weeks. National Agencies and the Executive Agency may give further advice and support concerning visas, residence permits, social security, etc. The EU Immigration Portal contains general information on visa and residence permits, for both short-term and long-term stays.

Applicants can apply for an Erasmus scholarship by indicating their interest in the application form (please be aware that the deadline for scholarship applications is January 15). An Erasmus Mundus scholarship is valued at EUR 1400 per month and covers a total duration of 24 months. This scholarship will contribute to the costs incurred by the students, including travel, visa, accommodation installation, and subsistence costs. Additionally, the participation fees for scholarship recipients are waived.

An AON insurance is included in the scholarship: AON ICS Complete.

It provides coverage for medical expenses, emergency assistance, loss of or damage to personal belongings, personal liability, legal assistance, and any expenses that might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent health care, and/or emergency hospital treatment or death. Subject to the terms and conditions of the Policy, benefits are payable to the beneficiary, as stated in the policy conditions, up to the maximum benefits as shown on the policy that will be provided. EU-funded scholarships will be available annually for an average of 15 students. Admission to the degree programme and scholarship awards are determined by the Joint Admissions Board, which includes a representative from each university, with the Joint Programme Coordinator serving as the chairperson. It is important to note that, per the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master programme requirements, there is a residential eligibility criterion for scholarship applications. This criterion states that the study period must include at least two study periods in two different countries, which must be different from your country of residence when you apply. This criterion specifically applies to potential applicants who are currently residing in the Netherlands, Greece, Spain, or Iceland.
