Faculty of Humanities, Charles University

About

The Faculty of Humanities is the youngest faculty of Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe, but it is fresh and keeps up with the times. It offers interdisciplinary education in a wide range of humanities and social science disciplines (e.g. history, philosophy, anthropology or sociology), essential for understanding today's turbulent world. Even topics such as AI, corporeality or climate change are not just a matter for computer science, biology or natural science: they touch on humankind and humanity, humanity. It is our faculty that offers the opportunity to understand these phenomena and forces comprehensively and thus to acquire them practically.

The Faculty of Humanities at Charles University, founded in 1994, is a pioneer in interdisciplinary education, blending fields such as philosophy, social sciences, cultural anthropology, and history to offer a comprehensive approach to the humanities.

With a focus on interdisciplinarity and academic innovation, the faculty provides flexible study programmes at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. levels, some of which are offered in English and German, addressing the diverse needs of both traditional and non-traditional students. The faculty’s interdisciplinary ethos is reflected in programmes like the Liberal Arts and Humanities Bachelor's degree, which allows students to tailor their studies across a wide range of disciplines, from social sciences to languages and applied philosophy.

Located in a modern campus in Prague, the faculty fosters a highly international and dynamic academic environment, enhanced by active participation in exchange programs like ERASMUS+ and cutting-edge e-learning technologies.

With a faculty of 250 members and over 2,500 students, the institution supports a rich diversity of perspectives, preparing graduates for complex global challenges through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

The admission process at the Faculty of Humanities consists of two main steps:

Completing admission requirements specific to your chosen program(s)

This can mean successful completion of an entrance exam or submission of relevant documents. For admission requirements, please visit the program pages: Bachelor programmes, Masters programmes, Doctoral programmes.

    Providing proof of previous study

All programs require that you submit a certificate of previous studies. This means that you have to provide your high school diploma if you are applying to our Bachelor's program, or your Bachelor's degree if you want to apply to one of our Master's programs. The same logic applies to all Doctoral programs as well.

If you are coming to study at our Faculty from one of the states with visa obligations (a list of these states can be found on the website of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs), you need to go through the visa approval process.

To find out which type of visa or permit you need, check out our university's website.

Please read the abovementioned websites carefully and decide what type of visa/residence permit suits you best.

The Faculty of Humanities offers the possibility of obtaining a scholarship to all students enrolled in a follow-up Master’s programme taught in a foreign language (starting in the academic year 2025/2026). The reasons for obtaining the scholarship can be both outstanding performances, as well as social disadvantages; anyone who successfully fulfils the conditions of the admission procedure and enrols into studies can apply for the scholarship. Further information will be available at a later date. Please follow our website here.

The Faculty of Humanities rewards its most successful students by giving the top 10% of the best students in the class a merit-based scholarship (Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement). This scholarship applies to all active students who achieved excellent academic results in the previous year. The scholarship is awarded to students with the best average grade which is calculated as an arithmetic average of all grades the student achieved in the previous academic year.

Other options of funding your studies can be found through national governments and other non-state institutions. For more information please see our website.
