The Geology programme is designed to prepare highly qualified universal professionals, whose intellectual and practical skills match the requirements of modern geosciences and knowledge-based technologies. The graduates will be able: to demonstrate and apply a comprehensive geological knowledge and understanding, and to effectively apply it in scientific investigations and practical activities.

An Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer (AS-T) from Skyline College is intended for students who are interested in transferring to a California State University (CSU) campus with a major in Geology, or similar major.

Geology is the study of the structure, evolution, and history of Earth and its mineral and energy resources. Geology students at South Dakota Mines take advantage of the rich geological and paleontological resources of the region. They also can access the extensive fossil and mineral collections of the Museum of Geology, which is located on campus.

The program provides advanced training in geology, applicable to geological problem-solving. Our graduates have a solid foundation of knowledge in the different core disciplines of geology sciences (mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, and paleontology), complemented with advanced skills through specialized studies in selected areas. The field component includes a three-week geological mapping field school.

Explore the geology and ecology of western Norway! From Mountain to Fjord is an environmental course focusing on interdisciplinary natural science with a main emphasis on the geology and ecology of Western Norway.

The Associate Degree for Transfer in Geology prepares students for success in a baccalaureate degree in Geology with the lower division course work required to transfer into the CSU system. Students completing the Associate Degree for Transfer in Geology will be prepared to transfer to a CSU as juniors and pursue a baccalaureate degree in Geology. The Associate Degree for Transfer in Geology utilizes the scientific method to develop knowledge regarding the Earth Sciences among students interested in pursuing a baccalaureate degree in Geology with the California State University (CSU) system.

The Associate in Science in Geology transfer degree focuses on an understanding of the internal processes responsible for the formation of the Earth from a scientific perspective. Students choosing the geology degree program will study a range of natural science concepts, including plate tectonics, climate change, and the evolution of the dynamic planet Earth.

The Master of Geology provides an in-depth training in various fields of geology and develop knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to work in interdisciplinary teams addressing complex geological problems.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Geology is to provide qualifying students with an in-depth understanding and integrated knowledge of advanced applicable theory in the field of geology.

The Geology, BA program aims to provide students with both high-quality conceptual knowledge and hands-on training in geology in preparation for careers within the earth-science field or for graduate studies in geology.

The Applied geology in the master’s study is a technically oriented geological field of study that to a necessary extent ensures all the geological research and survey activities. The study is focused mainly on the education of experts in the areas of hydrogeology, engineering geology, technical mineralogy and petrography, environmental geochemistry, deposit geology and applied geophysics.

An Associate of Science for transfer degree in Geology prepares the student for transfer to a baccalaureate institution for a four-year degree in Geology. While some jobs are available for technicians with Associate degrees in Geological Science, a Bachelor's degree in Geology is a minimum requirement for employment in exploratory geology, minerals management, and engineering.

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering offers advanced study leading to a M.S. degree in Geology and Geological Engineering*. Students must elect to pursue either a Geology Specialization or a Geological Engineering Specialization, each of which has different background and program requirements. At this time there is no direct admission into the non-thesis option.

The M.Sc. in Geological and Environmental Studies Program at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is a research degree with a thesis, designed to impart research skills and professional competence in a variety of fields in geology and environmental science. The study program is subject to rules and regulations set by the Faculty of Natural Sciences, including awarding of credit points and eligibility for scholarships and teaching assistantships.

Students must elect to pursue a specialization in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Mining Engineering. Those interested in paleontology at the PhD level enroll in the Geology Specialization.
