Upon completing the BA degree with a major in French Studies, students will be able to: Communicate fluently in spoken and written French at an advanced level, as indicated by the ability to: understand spoken French, converse in French, critically read and translate French texts, and write in multiple genres in French. Achieve the cultural literacy necessary for studying abroad or practicing internationally-based professions by demonstrating an understanding of the major social, cultural, and political stakes of the French and Francophone world, past and present. Demonstrate an interdisciplinary understanding of French studies through critical investigations of French literature, art, film, and other cultural forms in a global context. Learn and apply various research skills, including critical thinking and reading skills, theory, and criticism, to French and Francophone texts (broadly construed) in order to produce new critical insights verbally or in writing.

It is an interdisciplinary program of four years, organized around literatures and cultures of the French-speaking world, including France. We invite candidates with a traditional master's degree in French studies, as well as candidates whose course has been less typical, provided that their file meets the requirements of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS).

Dynamic faculty members, are committed to helping students become citizens of the global community, and engage in teaching, research, publication, and other professional activities.

Our students learn about French and Francophone culture directly through language and literature. We conduct almost all of our courses in French. These courses span literature and culture from the Middle Ages to the present, and they emphasize significant authors or problems rather than chronological surveys.
