This major aims to cultivate basic theories and basic knowledge of environment and development, accept basic training in environmental engineering experimental skills, engineering practice, computer applications, scientific research and engineering design methods, and have the ability to monitor, control and manage pollutants. Environmental quality assessment, environmental planning and management, and other professional skills, master the engineering and technical personnel for simulation calculation and process optimization of pollution control process, technical transformation of existing environmental engineering facilities, and development and design of new environmental protection processes. This major is a characteristic major of Jiangsu Province and a three-star major in the national university rankings.

The major aims at developing senior engineering and technical talents who are qualified for the planning, design, construction, management, environmental restoration and protection of water environment, atmosphere, noise, solid waste, and other environmental aspects as well as for the environmental monitoring and environmental quality evaluation in the field of environmental science and engineering.

Environmental Science and Engineering (Engineering) has a significant advantage in the interdisciplinary study of both geochemistry and environmental chemistry: The research of Environmental Science mainly focuses on analysis and evaluation of environmental problems caused by the development, transportation, processing, and utilization of fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal) as well as environmental management.

This course deals with the broad aspects of environmental management relevant to practising professionals in engineering science, planning, architecture, law, surveying, health and building. Engineers, scientists, town planners and other professionals working in this field have a compelling duty to ensure that the adverse effects of development on the total environment are minimised. The subjects offered in this course follow an integrated approach to professional practice through a choice of compulsory subjects in professional engineering, environmental engineering management and an elective.

This course is designed to enable engineers and other technical specialists to take a leadership role in the field of environmental engineering and management. The course deals with the broad aspects of environmental management relevant to practising professionals in engineering science, planning, architecture, law, surveying, health and building. Engineers, scientists, town planners and other professionals working in this field have a compelling duty to ensure that the adverse effects of development on the total environment are minimised. The duration of the course is one-and-a-half years; however, applicants with a recognised bachelor's degree in engineering or the natural and physical sciences are eligible for recognition of prior learning of up to four subjects and are thus able to complete the course in one year on a full-time basis.

The Department of Surveying and Mapping Engineering, starting as the Survey Teaching and Research Section in 2001, was established in 2006. At present, there are surveying and mapping engineering specialty and surveying and mapping engineering (intelligent navigation experimental class). Surveying and Mapping Engineering is a national first-class major construction site, a certified specialty, a featured specialty in Beijing, and a brand specialty in Beijing. There are 21 full-time teachers, including 3 professors, 10 associate professors, and eight lecturers. Among the teachers, one is honored with the title of National Young Talents, and one is the Beijing Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teacher. The faculty members have published more than 20 monographs and textbooks. And one course of the department has been rated as one of the best courses in Beijing. Relying on the three research features of urban mapping, navigation and location services, and health monitoring of super-large special-shaped buildings (structures), the department has undertaken more than 20 national and provincial/ministerial scientific research projects, won more than 10 provincial and ministerial academic awards and 5 provincial and ministerial teaching awards in the past five years. Our students have won more than 50 national, provincial and ministerial awards in academic or skills competitions. Till now we have educated more than 4,000 outstanding graduates for the country and the capital, and they have become the backbone of the capital city construction and management.
