Our Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Economics and Accounting program is CPA-accredited and gives a career advantage to students looking to become an accountant. Unlike most programs in accounting, this one prepares you to understand business and government issues in a data-driven economy at the macro level

The Department of Economics offers a course-based Master of Arts program, a course-based Master of Arts program with a specialization in Economics and Finance and a thesis-based PhD program. Areas of study in Economics include but are not limited to Applied Econometrics, Economic Development, Environmental and Resource Economics, Financial Economics, Industrial Organization, International Economics, Labor Economics, Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, and Public Economics. The Department does not guarantee that each of these fields will be offered in any given year.

Economics courses provide individuals with a logical and consistent framework for understanding basic concepts such as market equilibrium, social welfare and economic policies. A variety of active learning methods are used in economics classes. Film, class discussion, and multi-media presentations help engage students in active learning. Economics provides a strong insight into the economic and public policy environment in which virtually every profession, such as finance, journalism and health care, will be pursued.

In first year, you’ll cover the fundamentals of micro- and macro-economics. In upper years, you can analyze how those principles play out in a wide range of sectors, including public policy, labour economics, health economics, finance, sport, and more.

In your first year of studies in the Economics and Finance program, you’ll get a broad liberal arts education that creates a strong foundation for your future studies. During your second year, you’ll have a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of economic and statistical theory, and the opportunity to investigate a wealth of options (environmental economics, labor economics, health economics, finance, policy study, game theory, public finance and more). In your third and fourth years, you’ll specialize with courses that will bring you to the leading edge of current understanding in economics, finance, or financial economics.

The study of economics helps us understand our world: wages and employment, economic growth, productivity, wealth and poverty, government budgets and taxation, resource exploitation, business practices, inflation, recession, regional economic differences. In the undergraduate program in economics, we study the history and current reality of these issues, and the principles and techniques necessary to gain a sound understanding of the choices and problems facing us during our lifetime. Students earning a general BA degree in economics can take a wide variety of economics courses while still pursuing interests in other fields. The advanced BA degree in Economics provides greater specialization. The Honours program is intellectually stimulating and offers smaller third and fourth-year classes.

The Associate of Arts Degree in Economics allows students to build a foundation in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics principles. It also prepares students to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Economics or a related field. Students will learn about complex real-world questions as well as human behaviour. Students will be able to explore various areas in Economics such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, environmental economics, labour economics, as well as money, banking and financial markets.
