10 Natural Sciences Doctoral Degree Programs in Hungary

The Doctoral School of PhD in Physics covers the fields that are the subjects of research in the Institute of Physics; namely, laser physics, including THz and X-ray laser research, nonlinear optics, generation of ultrashort laser pulses, laser-based acceleration of particles, quantum informatics, theoretical atomic and molecular physics. World-leading research on high-energy THz pulses and their applications has a strong tradition at the Institute. There is a close collaboration between the doctoral school and three institutes of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences: both the Institute for Solid State Physics and the Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics of the Wigner Research Center, and the Institute for Technical Physics and Material Science, further the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI-ALPS) institute in Szeged, as well as several international scientific collaborators and local industrial partners. Students will be able to synthesize theoretical and empirical studies, conduct their own research, and present them both orally and in written form.

The students receive strong theoretical, research methodology, and scientific backgrounds, and complete their research individually, with some guidance from their supervisors. Supervision is offered by the top experts and wood scientists in Hungary. The topics are typically linked to industrial research or innovation projects so that Sopron doctoral graduates have not only strong theoretical backgrounds but are very practical scientists as well.

Doctoral training at the School of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences aims to educate specialists capable of independent and creative work in key areas of chemistry and environmental science, in line with the needs of a market economy. The programme provides a strong foundation for obtaining a doctoral degree.

The Doctoral School of PhD in Earth Sciences offers a four-year training and research program in various fields of geography, geology, and meteorology. Students can choose from a wide selection of research topics from the three subprograms of Physical geography, geology, and meteorology; Human geography; Geopolitics, Geo-economics, and political geography. Outstanding students can obtain a Ph.D. degree after completing their studies and research activities. The program began in 1994 and since then more than 100 researchers have received their Ph.D. degrees and joined the alumni network of the Doctoral School.

The structure of the PhD in Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Medical Faculty is similar to those of most European and American universities. The doctoral (PhD) degree, as the highest qualification attainable at university, is confer- red by the University of Pécs on those who have given evidence of having acquired sufficient practical skills and theoretical knowledge to conduct scientific research independently.

The Doctoral School of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science trains specialists capable of independent and creative work in key areas of chemical engineering and materials science, in line with market economy requirements. The programme provides a strong foundation for completing doctoral research and obtaining a PhD degree.

The Doctoral School of PhD in Chemistry offers a four-year training and research program in a wide range of fields in chemical sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, Homogeneous Catalysis, Chemistry of Coordination Compounds, Electrochemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Theoretical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Separation Science. The chemistry program began in 1993 and since then the students have had access to all modern techniques and could take part in international scientific research programs, which leads the outstanding students to obtain a Ph.D. degree upon complying with the requirements of their studies.

The Doctoral School of Biology and Spotbiology provides PhD in Biology and Sport Biology in a wide range of fields of biology and sports biology including genetics, microbiology, plant biology, ecology, regulatory biology, fitness, stress, sport, and immune system. Excellently equipped laboratories are available in the biology departments and at the Szentágothai Research Center of UP, as well as at the Balaton Limnological Institute. Through international contacts, we give the opportunity to our Ph.D. students mobility.

The Doctoral School of Applied Informatics and Applied Mathematics started its activities. in 2009. Its aim is to train researchers – mainly with an engineering background – who are familiar with the methods and techniques of informatics, computer science, and applied mathematics, and can solve real industrial research and development tasks using multi-disciplinary knowledge, communication skills, and teamwork experience.
