Admission to the nano-SE PhD program requires a bachelor's or master's degree in an engineering or science discipline based on physical science. The Introduction to Nanoscience course is offered for students from a range of backgrounds as an introduction to nanotechnology. Check with your department to determine whether credit for this course may be applied towards your degree.

The multidisciplinary doctorate degree in microsystems engineering builds on the fundamentals of traditional engineering and science combined with curriculum and research activities addressing the numerous technical challenges of micro- and nano-systems.

The goal of the doctoral study program (DSP) is to educate excellent experts in the physics of nanostructures and nanomaterials suited for the future carrier in basic and applied research in nanotechnologies. The main pillars of the DSP are the theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics and physics of surfaces, advanced experimental and theoretical methods for studying the nanostructures, and smart technologies for preparation of nanostructures and nanomaterials. The DSP is of highly interdisciplinary nature and fits the cutting-edge topics of current physical and material sciences like spintronics, nanoelectronics, nanomedicine, and quantum computing. It is the only DSP in the Faculty of mathematics and physics, which integrates various areas of physics and materials research with outreach to chemistry, biology, and medicine. In coherence with the tradition of the education, in the Faculty of mathematics and physics, the ultimate goal of the education in the DSP is to provide a deep theoretical background for understanding the key physical principles and phenomena underlying the unique properties of nanostructures and nanomaterials.

Nanosciences and Nanotechnology (NN) aim to understand, control and manipulate the matter at a nano-scale (typically from 1 to 100 nm) where unique physicochemical and biological phenomena take place, which can be explored in new applications. The DP in NN aims to train highly qualified specialists able to master concepts across conventional areas of knowledge and to design future developments in NN, while promoting/undertaking productive and transformative activities, and also contributing to environmental sustainability and social progress. The Ph.D. in Chemistry and Nanoscale Science at UNC Charlotte is an interdisciplinary program that addresses the development, manipulation, and use of materials and devices on the scale of roughly 1-100 nanometers in length, and the study of phenomena that occur on this size scale.
