The Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD (CENE PhD) degree program provides opportunities for students to gain expertise in a broad range of research areas that support state initiatives, closely tie to campus research thrusts, and align with federal funding sources such as NSF, DoE, DoD, USDA and NASA. The programme in International and Public Law, Ethics and Economics for Sustainable Development - LEES delves into law, ethics, and economics to address Sustainable Development Goals. It examines legal boundaries, redefines social well-being and distributive justice, and designs multi-level institutions for sustainability. It explores strategic litigation, economic analysis, and collective rational choice models to promote institutional change and social norms conformity.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Construction Management is to develop an intellectual with advanced abilities in applying construction engineering management with other related inter-disciplinary principles, in order to address construction management-related problems within the sector.

The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Construction combines advanced technical and management training with PhD level research in partnership with an industry partner/sponsor. Research projects will be directly relevant to the strategic plans of your industry partner and cover a wide range of topics in the interrelated, and globally critical areas of construction and engineering.

The doctoral programme corresponds to the main fields of research: increase of the energy efficiency of buildings, designing and researches of building’s constructions, development and research of new building materials, construction technology and management.

The Ph.D. in Infrastructure and Environmental Systems is an interdisciplinary program emphasizing innovations in design, analysis, construction and operation of civil, energy and environmental infrastructure. It also provides skills to scientifically analyze sustainability issues and explore renewable resources. Several national and international universities collaborate with the program on faculty and student exchanges, and joint supervision of doctoral students. 

The PhD Climate Change, Sustainability and Society is designed to cultivate a new generation of researchers equipped to tackle the urgent social challenges of sustainability in the context of global environmental change.

The aim of the doctoral programs of the CEE Department is to promote scholarly research leading to discovery, learning and innovation according to international standards of excellence, in the broader discipline of CEE, as well as in related multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields.

The MPhil-PhD in Sustainable Development provides students with high-quality theoretical and scientific training, as well as practical and skillful learning experiences. The Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering at the University of Aveiro (PDCiv-UA) has a duration of 3 years, corresponding to a total of 180 ECTS. It is organized in two distinct phases, a first curricular and a second dedicated to the development of research work, preparation of publications and production of the doctoral thesis. The first year comprises the curricular component (60 ECTS) structured in modules of advanced training courses and seminars, in several thematic areas of the scientific domain of: Civil Engineering, comprising the curricular units of Advanced Studies in Civil Engineering (12 ECTS), Monitoring and Observation of Works (6 ECTS) and Research Project Seminar (30 ECTS); Management, with the Entrepreneurship course unit (6 ECTS); and yet, an optional curricular unit from any scientific area (6 ECTS), this curricular unit should be advised by the doctoral student's supervisor, when available. At the end of the first year, the student, within the Research Project Seminar curricular unit, will have to present and publicly defend his / her doctoral work plan before a jury, with the continuation of his / her studies dependent on a positive evaluation of this curricular unit. . Students may be exempted from attending one or more components of the 1st curricular year, in accordance with the stipulations in the Regulations of the Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering of the AU.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Quantity Surveying is to develop an intellectual with the advanced ability to produce quantity surveying research that seeks to add knowledge and growth to this particular sector. One of the main objectives in this process is to develop an advanced capability to conduct interdisciplinary quantity surveying research of an original nature. It will also promote a lifelong learning approach, as well as an aptitude for training other students in similar fields.
