5 Literacy Course Programs

In the Course in Initial Adult Literacy and Numeracy you will have to opportunity to study drama, creative writing, beauty, adventure sports or games design while learning core literacy and numeracy skills. Are you at least 16 years old? Do you want to study something creative and improve your literacy and numeracy skills? Did you attend a specialist school or have support from a teacher's aide in class? This course gives you the opportunity to take part in a range of subjects that align with your interests.

This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Students who complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy requirement for graduation. Students will read a variety of informational, narrative, and graphic texts and will produce a variety of forms of writing, including summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces, and news reports. Students will also maintain and manage a portfolio containing a record of their reading experiences and samples of their writing.

This course prepares the student to respond to and critique a variety of short texts, to experience literature from a more intimate perspective and to empathize through the words and actions of the characters in the play. It promotes familiarity with history’s most influential writers and what makes them still relevant today through the use of a modern storytelling device.

The goal of this course is to help students further develop their academic English language skills and move toward mastery of grade-level-appropriate academic language. Literary Studies develops the theme of personal discovery. Conventions of language—grammar, usage, and vocabulary—are applied to descriptive, narrative and expository paragraph and essay compositions.
