French is spoken by more than 220 million people worldwide and is the only language other than English spoken on five continents, from Senegal to New Caledonia, from Quebec to Louisiana, from Belgium to Guadeloupe. Moreover, French is also one of the official languages of the United Nations, UNESCO, NATO, the International Red Cross, Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders), les Jeux Olympiques, la Féderation Internationale de Football Association, and many other international organizations.

All students wishing to enroll in French language courses must take the Language Placement Test. Only those students who have had no more than one semester of high school French are exempt from taking this examination and may enroll in French 1 (Introductory French). Placement test results are valid for one year; thereafter it must be retaken.

Explore the art of French, engage with its cultures and rediscover your own through others’ perspectives. The Department of French Studies offers about 30 courses in French language, literature and culture. Students build linguistic skills from beginning through advanced levels in grammar, phonetics and composition and use state-of-the-art technology to assist in their learning. French studies examines issues such as immigration, secularism, identity, gender and education across space (France and Francophone countries) and time, and at the crossroads of literary studies, art, history, linguistics and social sciences.

Students who have taken French, Italian, or Spanish in high school must take a computerized placement test before enrolling in a language or literature course in the Department of French. We strongly recommend that they take the 20-minute test on-line upon their arrival at the college. Students who study abroad on programs other than Colorado College’s must take at least two courses beyond 306, in addition to 431 and 432 at Colorado College, as well as completing the detailed major requirements described above, to receive a French degree from the college. Only two credits from any unaffiliated program abroad will be accepted into the major.

The minor in French aims to develop students’ proficiency in the French language and introduce them to different aspects of French and Francophone cultures. Students who choose to minor in French are expected to achieve intermediate proficiency in oral and written French, to demonstrate a general understanding of the history of French and Francophone literatures and cultures, and to develop an awareness of the ways that French and Francophone studies intersect with other disciplines. As such, a minor in French will complement the coursework and professional development of students majoring in business, film, music, theatre, and international relations, among other fields.
