The Graduate School of Education awards an undergraduate minor in the field of Education. The minor is structured to provide a substantial introduction to education through a broad-based and focused study of educational research, theory and practice. The goals of the minor are to allow undergraduates to develop an understanding of the core issues facing educators and policymakers, to make connections to their major programs of study, and to provide rigorous preparation for graduate studies in Education.

The emphasis of this major is to provide candidates with professional coursework needed to pursue a career in education-related roles. This major does not lead to teacher licensure. All areas include field experience in area schools. Students complete capstone projects during their senior year related to their chosen area of study. Students are required to select a minor with Educational Studies coursework. Programs are offered in the following areas: Education Paraprofessional Students take education courses related to planning, teaching, assessing, and managing learning environments in preparation for becoming an organizational aide. Education Research and Writing Students take coursework related to social science research, professional writing, educational methods, policy, process, and assessment.

In education studies, you will delve into the sociology, political economy, cultural foundations, philosophy and history of education. The Bi-College Education Studies major is built around four mutually-informing pursuits: teacher preparation; the interdisciplinary study of learning; the investigation of the politics of schooling; and students' growth as reflective facilitators, learners, researchers. Students who complete one of the Education major options are prepared to collaborate, act, research, reflect, and work to challenge and transform oppressive educational systems into joyful and just ones. In keeping with the philosophy of the program, each course includes a field experience—from two hours each week to full-time practice teaching—through which students learn to integrate academic and experiential knowledge.

Education Studies is the exploration of areas related to education, and the Wabash Department of Education Studies offers a program that both prepares those headed toward a career in the classroom, and explores the big questions of educational philosophy, policy, history, and practice. Those questions, and their answers, lie at the heart of the liberal arts, engaging students in dialog related to human educational development and educational systems. Such flexibility is an attractive option for students in any major, allowing for critical thought on practical topics.

The educational studies major will provide you with the opportunity to study the discipline of education as it relates to other liberal arts disciplines. Educational studies fosters within students a deep understanding of the complexity of education and schooling as well as an ability to think critically about the ways in which education intersects with a broad range of social, cultural, political and economic forces.

A researcher in postcolonial studies, Dr. Anna Lesne has studied representations of place and collective identity in scientific and literary texts produced in and on the French Caribbean, and the role played by writers and public intellectuals, including Aimé Césaire and Edouard Glissant. She’s developed an interest in critical geography while teaching at NYU. She now studies issues of power, inequalities, discriminations, and resistance in global cities, in particular Paris. These are key topics in her Experiential Learning seminars for GLS students, along with research methods. She also teaches the Internship Seminar, where students develop a research project based on a fieldwork experience (a two-month internship in Paris). Before teaching at NYU, Anna Lesne has lived on four continents, taught in a few universities, and been a journalist for five years. She has a Ph.D. in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the Université de Provence and an M.A. in Comparative Literature from the Sorbonne.
