Students who wish to pursue courses within these fields will be equipped with the necessary skills to enable them to formulate deeper interests and knowledge in theatre, dance and related fields such as film, television, advertising and teaching and/or preparation for pursuing research degrees (for students wishing to enter academia). Students will be exposed to the educational contexts of arts and culture and will explore some of the key discourses in Dance, including Dance and Cultural formation, History and Aesthetics. Coursework will be by seminars, practical workshops, engagement with on and off campus dance groups, conferences, and symposia. All of the dimensions through which one comes to experience dance, from studying a range of dance techniques, choreographing and performing to viewing and critically and historically assessing dance, are represented in the course offerings of the Dance Division.

The Barnard College Department of Dance, located in a world dance capital, offers an interdisciplinary program that integrates the study of dance within a liberal arts setting of intellectual and creative exploration. The major builds upon studio courses, the Department's productions at Miller Theater, New York Live Arts and other venues, as well as a rich array of dance studies courses, allowing students' creative work to develop in dialogue with critical inquiry into the history, culture, theory and forms of western and non-western performance, typically enhanced by study in other disciplines.

The Dance Program offers a rich array of dance experiences for the many and diverse students who choose Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges. It welcomes the newcomer as well as supports the continuing progress of trained dancers. The program includes a range of technique courses in different styles and genres of dance, multiple performance ensembles, courses in composition and choreography, and dance studies courses that introduce students to dance as an exciting area of research and inquiry.

You can declare a minor in dance to complement a major in any other area of study. All dance courses also satisfy General Education requirements at Curry. The combination of a dance minor with a major in public health and wellness, psychology, graphic design, studio arts, or business administration, for example, may lead to graduate study and/or careers in such fields as dance/health education, expressive therapies, or arts administration.

The dance performance emphasis is designed to prepare students for careers in dance as professional performing artists. Students in this program focus on technique, performance, and choreography while participating in some pedagogical training as well.

Dance courses at Sewanee will provide you with an inclusive learning environment, accommodating all levels and backgrounds of experienced dancers seeking to develop their skills further to those discovering dance for the first time. Sewanee offers ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance styles with accompanying courses that focus on composition and production. All classes take place in the professionally equipped dance studio in the Tennessee Williams Center.

Dance is an exploration of how the body speaks. We offer a comprehensive curriculum with learning goals that emphasize technical training, creative experimentation, and critical/theoretical understanding. As a dance student you will investigate physical, cultural and aesthetic principles of dance and embody the skillful practice of different dance traditions. The curriculum of core courses and areas of concentration emphasize technical training, performance, creative practice and critical/theoretical understanding.

The Simon's Rock dance program encourages each student to understand movement as a form of personal expression, a kinesthetic experience, a cultural and historical phenomenon, and as a subject of aesthetic analysis. From their first semester, regardless of previous dance experience, students not only focus on dance technique, but begin a guided study of the creative process through choreography and performance. The concentration is designed for students interested in exploring and analyzing dance from any of the following perspectives: as a creative performance art, a reflection of a culture and a historical period, as an exploration of physical movement, or in relation to and in combination with other arts

The Smith College Department of Dance gives students a broad view of dance in preparation for professional performance careers, as a training ground for choreographers, or to prepare for study in graduate dance programs. Students who do not intend to pursue dance professionally are also welcome. In both the undergraduate and graduate programs, the faculty is dedicated to fostering each student’s unique talents as the student explores creative dance experiences. The Smith dance department is a member of the Five College Dance, a nationally recognized model for excellence in dance in higher education.

Dance activities at Carleton are designed to give students of all levels opportunities for active participation in three basic areas: movement practice, choreography and analysis, and performance. The broadest goal of these offerings is to increase understanding of the art of dance as a contribution to a liberal arts education, and to connect theory and practice through embodied learning.

A minor in dance provides students with a range of experiences that encourage creative exploration and critical thinking. Minors are encouraged to enhance their study at summer dance festivals and intensive workshops. Dance classes are often enhanced by attendance at and participation in the dance performances and opportunities offered in the college and local communities. Dance minors should expect to actively participate in these co-curricular activities.

Dance is an interdisciplinary art form that involves elements of theatre, music, design and the visual arts in a variety of cultural contexts. Instruction is available to students who wish to study dance as one of the liberal arts, as well as to those who aspire to professional careers in dance performance or related fields. The Dance Program challenges students to develop concentration skills, observational and analytical abilities and capacities for working with broad aesthetic concepts and fine details while developing their creative instincts. Solid foundations in modern, ballet, composition and repertory are designed to build strong technique and a sense of artistic expression, while exposure to non-Western dance forms encourages students to better understand other cultures through their performance traditions.
