African Studies focuses on the interactions among the social, economic, cultural, historical, linguistic, genetic, geopolitical, ecological, and biomedical factors that shape and have shaped African societies. The Center for African Studies coordinates an interdisciplinary program in African Studies for undergraduates and graduate students. The program seeks to enrich understanding of the interactions among the social, economic, cultural, historical, linguistic, genetic, geopolitical, ecological, and biomedical factors that shape and have shaped African societies.

Pitt’s African Studies Undergraduate Certificate allows students in any major — from the arts and sciences to the professional schools — to enhance their program of study and complement their department major with international studies. Wesleyan University’s African Studies Cluster is devoted to facilitating a deeper understanding and engagement with Africa for the Wesleyan Community and beyond. We bring together a diverse array of courses focusing on Africa, culling the interests of faculty specializing in Africa from a wide variety of disciplines.

Africana studies examines the diverse experiences of people of African descent worldwide, focusing especially but not exclusively on African, African American and Caribbean affairs and culture. Using the tools of the social sciences and humanities, we investigate the structures, organizations, problems and perspectives of those of African origin and the African Diaspora.

The African American Studies Program at Wesleyan offers a dynamic interdisciplinary approach to the study of people of African descent in the Black Atlantic world, especially in the United States and in the Caribbean. The major enables undergraduates to bring the methodologies, theories, and insights of diverse disciplines to bear on their studies of the history, literature, politics, culture, and art of peoples of African descent.

Africana studies offers courses in the following fields of study: African American; African, and African diaspora. Over the course of their major/minor in Africana studies, students acquire knowledge and develop skills through coursework, independent studies, and, in some cases, a senior honors project.

Stemming from the Black Studies programs and departments formed in the late 1960s, Africana Studies is the study of cultures, politics, and histories of peoples of African origin in both Africa and in the African diaspora. At present, Africana Studies is a systematic way of studying black people’s religion, sociology, culture, cultural expression and history throughout the world. It examines the iterative effect of the black experience on society as well as society’s impact on the black experience. Therefore, this academic endeavor relies heavily on many disciplines across the social sciences and humanities.

The Intercollegiate Department of Africana Studies offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that centers and examines the African diaspora from a liberal arts perspective. Courses accommodate the needs of majors and nonmajors, providing significant preparation for careers in education, social work, public policy, law, medicine, business, international relations and advanced research.

Africana Studies is an interdisciplinary minor that examines the culture and experiences of African peoples and those who make up the African Diaspora throughout the world. Relevant courses come from a variety of disciplines, including literature, history, sociology, economics, politics, art and music. Students interested in global history or politics, the Atlantic world, international law, international relations, world economics, African-American studies, comparative literature and Africa should consider this program.

Africana Studies examines the history, politics, society, and culture of people descended from the African continent and the diaspora of African people. Coursework delves into social justice and issues of race and racism, challenging students to ask difficult questions. Students will also explore the art, literature, and culture of Africans, West Indians, and African Americans.

As a field of inquiry, Africana studies describes and analyzes the origins and experiences of people of African descent wherever they live or have lived. The intellectual traditions inform this field of African American, African, and African Diasporic studies.

Students majoring or minoring in the intercollegiate Africana Studies program explore Africa and the experiences of people of the African diaspora and heritage from the perspectives of anthropology, art history, history, literature, psychology, religious studies and other areas. You will be exposed to a broad range of research and teaching, and choose a concentration in the arts, humanities or social sciences. The rigor and scope of Africana Studies prepares students for careers in a variety of fields, including education, social work, public policy, law, medicine, business and international relations.

Black Studies is an interdisciplinary minor that invites students to explore the breadth of the field. Classes provide students with in-depth exposure to the historical, cultural, political, economic and social development of the African Diaspora. Through a variety of humanities and social sciences approaches, students will explore the history and foundation of Black Studies while also building the critical thinking skills to apply what they learn to topics in a variety of disciplines. A minor in Black Studies prepares students for a global future providing them with an understanding of a key demographic of the US and world.
