35 Conducting Degree Programs

The Department of Symphonic and Opera Conducting is currently a research and teaching unit of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting, Vocal Performance, Music Theory and Artistic Education. It is composed of conductors who, in addition to their artistic activities appreciated abroad, have been heading numerous Polish artistic institutions. The Department is engaged in conducting artistic and research activities in the field of conducting, as well as organizing courses, conferences and events aimed at promoting and developing the art of conducting.

Aim of the program in BA in Orchestral and Choral Conducting: To educate musicians who - with their performing skills, theoretical knowledge, and highly developed musical abilities - enrich and spread the Hungarian and  European music culture. They can enrich the repertoire of musical knowledge with their sophisticated musical taste and are able to work in musical institutions, professional performing ensembles and in other occupations which require music education.

The Department of Choral Conducting, operating within the structure of the Institute of Conducting, was established in 2019 and continues the tradition of previous units operating at the Academy since 1972: the Department of Choral Conducting founded by Prof. Stefan Stuligrosz, the Department of Conducting Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles and, again, the Department of Choral Conducting. The successive heads included Prof. Stefan Stuligrosz (1972-1982), Prof. Stanisław Kulczyński (1982-2005), Prof. Janusz Dzięcioł (2005-2007), Prof. Leon Zaborowski (2007-2012), Prof. Magdalena Wdowicka-Mackiewicz (2012-2020). Currently, the Department is headed by Prof. Marek Gandecki.

The Institute of Conducting was established in 2019 as a result of the reform of the Academy’s structure. It combined all the specialties related to the conducting major, previously operating in different faculties. The new unit brings together highly specialized and experienced staff, providing an extremely broad spectrum of education and a rich program of studies.

The Section of Brass Band Conducting is a substantive unit of the I. J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań. It began its activities in 2019 as part of the Conducting major. The impetus for the establishment of the Section was the dynamically developing specialty of brass band conducting, functioning since 2010 at the then Department of Choral Studies. Its graduates serve as conductors of military orchestras in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland, and also conduct various types of brass bands affiliated with local cultural centers.

Your passion becomes a profession. Students acquire a strong foundation in conducting technique and knowledge of choral literature. Graduate conductors have unparalleled opportunities to perform and conduct choirs renowned for their musical excellence around the world.

Besides general music theory and music history classes, the training will introduce students to the technique of choral conducting as well as to theoretical and practical issues related to the human voice, voice formation and maintenance, the history of choral music, repertoire, different styles and all the related know-how in all branches of choir music. MA in Choral Conducting and learning it at a high level requires personal skills, artistic sensitivity, having a good ear, knowledge of music and, most of all, the individual’s singing culture and knowledge about chamber music.

You will get to lead a trainee orchestra or a choir on a weekly basis, and some of your rehearsals are recorded on video. During the joint feedback sessions, you will be able to exchange thoughts and ideas on your work with your student colleagues and the supervising teachers. Regular collaborations with professional orchestras both in Finland and abroad serve as a bridge between studies and working life. These working methods make our education unique even by international standards. The program in conducting comprises a variety of subjects within music theory and conducting practice. With the help of studies that are tailored to fit your personal goals, you will acquire the skills needed to work in demanding roles in the field of music.
