Classical Studies Classics Discover the culture of Ancient Greece and Rome and their enduring impact on the modern world. You may pursue a Classics degree focusing on the Greek and Latin languages; or opt for Classical Studies which deals with Greek and Roman literature, culture and history. As part of your studies, you will critically examine philosophy and dive into sport and spectacle, love and war, law and culture, Athenian tragedy and comedy, and ancient women and children.

Classical Studies explores the influence of Greek and Roman culture throughout the centuries. The study of classical literature is a companion and tool to all other liberal arts courses; StFX’s dedicated humanities professors understand this and are committed to helping you grasp their culture and traditions in philosophy, theology, literature, art, and history.

As a student, you can examine all aspects of these civilizations: ancient Greek and Latin languages, history, religion, warfare, myth, science, philosophy, literature, art, and archaeology.

Ancient archaeological and literary evidence (in English translation) is the basis for a survey of the major social, political, religious, intellectual, artistic and literary institutions and achievements of the Greeks from the Bronze Age to the early Roman Imperial Period. The Greeks are studied in the context of the ancient Mediterranean world but also with reference to their continuing contributions to world civilization.

As a student of Greek & Roman Studies, you will be introduced to the peoples of Ancient Greece and Rome, to their societies and to the historical events of which they were a part.

This course addresses contemporary theories and historical approaches currently used in the Arts and Humanities.

The Greeks and the Romans laid foundations upon which Western Civilization rests. We owe to the Greeks the roots of much of our literature, science, philosophy and art, while the Romans gave the still living legacy of their language, literature and law to an empire that stretched from the North Sea to the Persian Gulf. To allow the student to share in this rich heritage, the Department of Classics offers courses in the languages, literature, history, philosophy and civilization of Greece and Rome.
