The Bachelor’s programme in Development Studies is interdisciplinary and focuses on economic, social and political processes and their links to development cooperation. The aim is to provide the knowledge needed in order to critically examine and understand the preconditions for, and process of, development. The programme draws on four different scientific traditions: sociology, political science, human geography and economic history. Students gain background knowledge needed to prepare for graduate and doctoral studies, as well as working in development-related fields at government agencies, private firms or NGOs.

Human Development (HDEV) is one of two undergraduate majors in the College of Community and Public Affairs. HDEV allows students to explore individual, social, and structural aspects of human development as a basis for understanding principles that benefit themselves and others by achieving a solid foundation in the theories and research defining the field of human development and engaging in a critical exploration of social, cultural, economic, historical, and political frameworks and how individuals, families, and communities are situated within them developing the understanding and skills needed to enhance and promote diversity, equity, and social justice fostering a complex understanding of human conditions. 

Each semester, Global Community Development Students are enrolled in interactive courses with rich content and experiences. Every course has the added value of embedded fieldwork experiences, providing the students with a real world application of course content.
