The program of study in Art Education consists of four curricular components: freshman seminar and general education, the content courses, the professional studies core, and content pedagogy (methods and internship).

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art Education focuses on art and design, art history, and instructional methods. Students have ample opportunities to master various media; engage with artists, teachers, and museum professionals; and complete field experiences at K-12 schools. The degree prepares students to receive licensure at the secondary level (grades 7-12). However, as part of the degree, students may pursue an endorsement to teach at the elementary level (grades K-6) or explore options in museum education or art therapy.

The program also addresses current issues in K-12 education and leads to licensure by the State of Illinois. Because North Central graduates complete at least 155 pre-residency teaching hours, it’s no surprise that they enjoy extremely high teacher placement rates.

Students in the Art Education program must earn a 3.0-grade point average in their education courses and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 at the time of application for student teaching. The Michigan Teacher Certification Regulations require that students take forty (40) credit hours of general or liberal education. These courses are intended to serve the same purpose as Siena Heights University\’s Liberal Arts Studies, that is, to ensure that a prospective teacher has some background in each of the traditional academic disciplines.

Art educators do more than instruct students on the techniques and theories of art, but equip students with the foundation to take their knowledge of color, form, and design into their own hands. Your degree in Art Education will let you explore contemporary issues and practice in the visual arts and in art education. You’ll also gain more than 100 hours of observation before completing required student-teaching hours.
