Our interdisciplinary program in African and African-American studies integrates the social sciences and humanities.

The African American Studies Minor focuses on African and African American history and culture related especially to the experiences of African people living in the Americas. The program provides students with knowledge and an understanding of an Afrocentric world view and traces the roots of oppression of African people.

The African American Studies minor provides an interdisciplinary investigation of the origins, experiences, conditions, accomplishments, and contributions of people of African ancestry in the Americas. The program is designed for all students who want to deepen their understanding of African Americans by studying their earlier history in Africa, their transition to the New World, and their diasporic experiences in the Americas.

Africana Studies prepares you to be a global citizen in our technologically advancing world by developing your critical thinking skills, oral competence, writing ability, technological and ecological literacy in order to facilitate positive change for the betterment of the African Diaspora and humanity.

Bachelor of Science in African Studies offers an interdisciplinary educational experience that covers the dynamic history, literature, and music of the peoples of Africa and its huge Diaspora. From Egyptian Art to modern jazz, you gain a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of Africa’s past and present. You apply overlapping fields of history, political science, language, literature, art, music, philosophy and religion and can earn credits studying abroad in Africa or the Caribbean.

Basic Conversational SASL is a comprehensive and fun course to learn about basic South African Sign Language. In this course, you will be introduced to Deaf culture, basic vocabulary and sentence exercises.

The peoples, philosophies, arts, and cultural resources of Africa have made and continue to make fundamental contributions to every society on earth - particularly to visionings of humanity, justice, liberation, and community. Yet, from the imperial United States, Africa is often the least considered continent, its diverse peoples and realities obscured by racist stereotypes rooted in the long and ongoing history of European colonialisms and empire.
