Master's Degree in Advanced Studies in Spanish and Latin American Literature

The master's is primarily addressed to holders of bachelor's degrees and pre-EHEA degrees Hispanic studies. It may also be of interest to students from other language programmes, as well as graduates in humanities, history, history of art, philosophy and communication sciences.

The master's degree coordinator and tutor, in conjunction with the Admissions Committee, will examine all applications and may accept students from other academic backgrounds who show a particular interest in the course content (for example, those with accredited professional experience in a related field). Candidates must demonstrate ability, knowledge, interest and curiosity for in-depth study of the Spanish language and Hispanic literature.

The master's degree in Advanced Studies in Spanish and Latin American Literature comprises 48 credits of face-to-face learning and 12 credits corresponding to a final project.

The syllabus comprises the following modules:

Thought and Creation in Spanish and Latin American Literature. This is a compulsory module made up of five 6-credit subjects (for a total study load of 30 credits). This module is designed to provide the knowledge and skills required to situate the specific features of Spanish and Latin American literature in their particular social and cultural realities.

Tradition and Modernity in Spanish and Latin American Literature. This optional module is composed of several subjects, of which three must be chosen (18 credits) according to the students' research interests. Each subject aims to provide new insights and perspectives not covered at bachelor's degree level, with a particular emphasis on issues related to philological, methodological and professional practice. They also serve to enhance creativity and manage fields of interest for further development.

Final Project. This compulsory module, with a study load of 12 credits, requires students to complete a final project on a topic within one of the research areas covered by the course, under the supervision of a PhD holder from the teaching staff. The project should demonstrate the integration and application of the theoretical knowledge, methodological techniques and instrumental skills acquired throughout the course.

The master's degree in Advanced Studies in Spanish and Latin American Literature offers advanced academic and research training in the two fields that make up the program: Spanish literature and Latin American literature.

As an official master's degree offered by the Department of Hispanic Studies, it is designed to provide continued training for graduate students in this area and the requisite training in research to facilitate access to doctoral studies for those looking to prolong their academic training.

One of the main areas of work for graduates of the master's degree in Advanced Studies in Spanish and Latin American Literature is secondary and university teaching, as well as teaching and research in universities abroad. Other career opportunities exist in the business world (publishing, media, private foundations, cultural institutions, advertising, etc.). Graduates may also find positions in areas such as literary criticism, reviewing, digital publishing, blog and web editing, brand building, manuscript assessment, etc.
