The objective of the doctoral study program in chemistry is to train doctors of science, who are ready for a research career, able to work as scientists and educators. The program aims to expand their knowledge in chemistry and related fields, at the same time developing their skills of critical thinking, creativity, training their ability to seek original and independent solutions.

Everything around you is chemistry. Even you yourself are chemistry. In this Bachelor’s programme, you will get theoretical knowledge and practical skills to understand the world at a molecular level.

Since the dawn of mankind, materials have defined us and played a central role in human development. The ages of stone, bronze, and iron formed vital parts of our history and now we are entering the nano age. Using all the tools of chemistry, this MSc in Materials Chemistry will deepen your understanding of materials, developing and designing them to be lighter, stronger, cheaper, more durable, and environmentally friendly.

In this specialist route through our BSc (Honours) Natural Sciences (Q64) degree, you’ll learn about the structure, properties and reactivity of molecules, and the integral role these play in our understanding of the world around us. On completion of your degree, as well as gaining an understanding of chemistry, you’ll develop analytical and scientific literacy skills carrying out practical work and a research project.

In pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, students receive a strong foundation in analytical, physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry before selecting one of three options leading to the degree: biochemistry and natural products, environmental chemistry, or natural and synthetic polymer chemistry.

MSc in Chemistry can be joined at the Faculty of Science of the University of Pécs. The courses are open from September, each year, and are continued during a 4-semester cycle. The education is followed in English. The students who have studied chemistry, biochemistry, physics, and pharmacy at the undergraduate level (BSc) will complete their knowledge at the Master of Science level. The subjects of the Chemistry MSc studies include Advanced mathematics, Solid phase physics, Molecular biology, Coordination chemistry, Elemental organic chemistry, Advanced physical chemistry, Instrumental analysis, Theoretical chemistry, Organic chemistry of natural compounds, Surface chemistry, Proteins and protein networks, Advanced chemometric, Environmental technology, Pharmaceutical chemistry, Radiochemistry, and several more specific applied chemistry subjects.

The Low Carbon Technologies and Sustainable Chemistry is a new 2 years Master's Degree focused on natural cycles industrial chemistry, materials chemistry, industrial biotechnology aimed at assessing the environmental impact and managing and developing low environmental impact technologies.

The Doctoral School of PhD in Chemistry offers a four-year training and research program in a wide range of fields in chemical sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, Homogeneous Catalysis, Chemistry of Coordination Compounds, Electrochemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Theoretical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Separation Science. The chemistry program began in 1993 and since then the students have had access to all modern techniques and could take part in international scientific research programs, which leads the outstanding students to obtain a Ph.D. degree upon complying with the requirements of their studies.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers majors leading to a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts Degree. The B.A. Degree also has a Biochemistry Option. The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is designed primarily for students who plan to enter graduate programs in chemistry or other closely related sciences. Students graduating with this degree will be certified to the Society and will receive a certificate from the ACS. The Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry fulfills the need of those students who are pursuing pre-medical or pre-dental programs as well as those who plan to enter fields such as business, environmental or patent law, where a background in chemistry can be of great utility.

The Master's Degree Programme in Exact Sciences: Chemistry of Materials for Sustainable Development teaches you to understand, discover, create and develop new materials that improve the quality of life.

The Degree in Engineering in Industrial Chemistry provides training based on the theoretical bases and the technologies of this field. Every person graduated in Industrial Chemistry Engineering can carry out tasks of design, maintenance and operation of chemical process equipment, experiment with organic and inorganic substances, heat transmission or mass transfer, fluid flow and chemical reaction engineering. This degree also studies the use of raw materials, the chemistry of natural products, analyzes manufacturing processes, environmental contamination, and industrial safety and hygiene.

The study program in BSc in Chemistry offers complete education in chemistry, with directions in inorganic and organic chemistry, analytical and environmental chemistry, and physical chemistry.

Postgraduate study in Bioorganic Chemistry serves for the education of chemical experts with an emphasis on the structure and functions of small organic molecules in living organisms and on the possibility of influencing biological processes in these organisms through the action of such molecules. The program is thus directed towards the study of all aspects of organic compounds, which are indispensable for the structure and functioning of living organisms. The broad spectrum of these compounds includes molecules with a building (primary metabolites) function, signaling function, activating or deactivating function in relationship to strategic proteins within the living organisms, and also compounds, which are produced by these organisms (natural products, secondary metabolites, metabolites of xenobiotics). The study is founded on the structure and synthesis of organic compounds with a focus on natural products, heterocycles, and other organic compounds, which are capable of modulating biological processes. Elucidation of the function of such compounds as parts of biological structures as well as that of their influence on biological processes and the possibility to modify this influence through structural changes are no less important. Bioorganic Chemistry thus serves as a link between Organic Chemistry and biomedical disciplines and partially overlaps with Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry. Bioorganic Chemistry is, however, more general than the latter two programs, which are primarily focused on the study and development of drugs, ie. a more limited subgroup of biologically active compounds.

Doctoral training at the School of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences aims to educate specialists capable of independent and creative work in key areas of chemistry and environmental science, in line with the needs of a market economy. The programme provides a strong foundation for obtaining a doctoral degree.

Chemistry is a diverse field that involves the study of the properties, composition, and structure of substances. At JMU, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is large enough to offer modern laboratories and advanced instrumentation, and small enough for students to gain hands-on experience with this research-grade equipment and to pursue individualized programs of study.
