Physics is a fundamental science, which aims to discover the laws underlying natural phenomena that manifest themselves on all scales of length and time, from the cosmos to elementary particles. Characteristic of physics is the method of investigation based on a dialectical relationship between theory and experiment. In addition to preparing for scientific research - in universities or research institutions - the study of physics provides solid theoretical and experimental foundations, combined with analysis, modeling, and problem-solving skills.

In the MSc in Physics, we offer comprehensive knowledge. Those skills and subject groups such as Modern Physics, Optics, Laser Physics, Physics of Quantum Systems, and Atomic and Molecular Physics encompass the science of the main areas of Physics based on the bachelor’s level of Physics. Practical courses and seminars provide students with hands-on skills. The seminars and practical courses outnumber the number of lectures in the curriculum. This is a good reflection of our preference for learning methods based on active student participation. We encourage students' activity with homework, and self-project tasks, and we support cooperative learning methods. The subjects of Quantum Systems and Laser Physics are closely related to the important research areas of the Institute of Physics.

The Physics Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown offers both a bachelor of science in natural sciences with a concentration in physics and a minor in physics. Students who wish to relocate to the Pittsburgh-Oakland campus to earn a BS in physics may complete their introductory, elective, and laboratory courses in physics on the Johnstown campus.

In this specialist route available in our BSc (Honours) Natural Sciences (Q64), you’ll develop the knowledge and skills you need to explore the smallest and largest scales of the Universe. You’ll be able to objectively and quantitatively describe, analyse, test and explain phenomena in the physical world, using appropriate mathematical tools and experimental methods.

An emphasis on Natural Sciences provides the student with an understanding of living and non-living systems and promotes an appreciation of the methodologies and tools of science. Students may select courses that focus on a specific major and then select complementary courses to strengthen their selected focus or they may select courses that strengthen and broaden their overall understanding of the Natural Sciences.

The pre-med program in physics fulfills the admission requirements for medical, dental, or veterinary school while providing in-depth training in the physical sciences. Premedical physics students build a strong foundation in mathematics, biology, and chemistry, and take specialized courses in modern physics, biochemistry, physical mechanics, and quantum mechanics.

The study program in BSc in Physics for the full-time training offers a complete education in physics, with special directions particularly in IT in physics and Applied physics (with a strong emphasis on laser physics). The curriculum is organized in modules covering the Introductory courses in nature sciences (24 credits) and Common courses (52 credits) for all physics students (basic courses in mathematics, physics and informatics).

Physics has shaped our view of the universe and the world around us by exploring the basic concepts of space, time, and matter. Physics not only lays the foundation for all other natural sciences and many engineering disciplines but is also a fundamental part of modern technology. At the same time, simulations and experiments in many areas of research and especially in physics generate vast amounts of data. To fully use this data and extract meaningful insights, advanced methods of data science including machine learning are essential. These tools have countless further applications in almost all aspects of daily life.

The study program is focused on the problems of didactics of physics and general problems of physics. It stems from scientific disciplines such as physics, didactics of physics, pedagogy, and psychology. The main goal is to provide students with a complex overview of the didactics of physics, teach them independent scientific practice in this field and allow for a deeper understanding of some parts of physics. This program naturally follows the master’s program Physics Education for Secondary Schools which, out of the whole Charles University, can be studied solely at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. It is therefore natural that this faculty also has a doctorate program focused on didactics of physics and general problems of physics. This study program is unique by being the only one at our university to offer doctorate-level studies in the field of didactics of physics.

Complement the Bachelor in Engineering Physics, Physics or other applied Physics/Engineering Physics formation, with advanced contents in Condensed Matter Physics and Nano-sciences; Photonics and Optoelectronics; and with a reasonable number of elective courses that allow students to choose part of their formation track. These elective courses may be chosen in the principal subject of the Program or in complementary areas like Mathematics, Mechanical and Electrotechnical Engineering, Chemistry, Management.

The International MSc Programme in Physics, delivered entirely in English, is designed to provide students with a thorough and flexible training in the field of physical sciences and its technological applications, in an exciting and international research environment. It is also aimed to provide a solid cultural background in the various fields of modern physics, covering both theoretical and experimental aspects. Students may specialize in a particular sub-field, such as Nuclear and particle astrophysics, Atomic and molecular physics, Physics of complex systems, Environmental physics, and Aerospace physics, thus taking the right road to become leader in their field of interest.

The Doctoral School of PhD in Physics covers the fields that are the subjects of research in the Institute of Physics; namely, laser physics, including THz and X-ray laser research, nonlinear optics, generation of ultrashort laser pulses, laser-based acceleration of particles, quantum informatics, theoretical atomic and molecular physics. World-leading research on high-energy THz pulses and their applications has a strong tradition at the Institute. There is a close collaboration between the doctoral school and three institutes of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences: both the Institute for Solid State Physics and the Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics of the Wigner Research Center, and the Institute for Technical Physics and Material Science, further the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI-ALPS) institute in Szeged, as well as several international scientific collaborators and local industrial partners. Students will be able to synthesize theoretical and empirical studies, conduct their own research, and present them both orally and in written form.

The Master's degree Program in Physics is open to students with a solid background in physics who are eager to expand their knowledge and experience in a modern physics research environment. The goal of the Master of Physics is to train excellent researchers in the field of materials science, subatomic physics, isotope physics, or theoretical physics.
