Physics at Westlake University has developed rapidly in recent years.  Great progress has been made in theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, atomic and molecular, and optical physics, and there are plans to develop high-energy physics and astrophysics directions. Physics students receive solid training in mathematics and theoretical and experimental physics. They will develop a wide range of interests and skills through coursework, experimentation, and participation in academic seminars and academic presentations.

The Doctoral School of PhD in Physics covers the fields that are the subjects of research in the Institute of Physics; namely, laser physics, including THz and X-ray laser research, nonlinear optics, generation of ultrashort laser pulses, laser-based acceleration of particles, quantum informatics, theoretical atomic and molecular physics. World-leading research on high-energy THz pulses and their applications has a strong tradition at the Institute. There is a close collaboration between the doctoral school and three institutes of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences: both the Institute for Solid State Physics and the Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics of the Wigner Research Center, and the Institute for Technical Physics and Material Science, further the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI-ALPS) institute in Szeged, as well as several international scientific collaborators and local industrial partners. Students will be able to synthesize theoretical and empirical studies, conduct their own research, and present them both orally and in written form.

The Ph.D. program is a 4-year degree (sometimes extended to 5) in which students master a subfield of physics. Doctoral students perform research at the highest level, advancing the state of the art in their subfields. Upon successful completion, our Ph.D. students take their place among the nation’s scientific leaders, in both academia and industry.

The PhD in Physics programme is hosted by the Division of Physics and Applied Physics at the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. PhD students take advanced courses and perform research under the supervision of a faculty member. The programme culminates in writing a scientific thesis and defending it before a panel of experts.

Bolstered by its proximity to the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), the nation’s leading site for underground nuclear and particle physics, the Ph.D. program at South Dakota Mines provides unique opportunities for research into the underlying principles of the natural world. Our internationally recognized faculty lead students in searches for the dark matter of the universe, studies of the nature of the neutrino and the origin of the chemical elements, as well as research into condensed matter, e.g. phase transitions in ferroelectric and magnetic materials or quantum materials. The purpose of the Ph.D. in Physics is to provide qualifying students with an in-depth understanding and integrated knowledge of advanced applicable theory in the field of physics.

The objective of doctoral studies in Physics is the development of highly qualified researchers in the field of physics, who are able to conduct scientific research for solutions to critical problems. This joint doctoral program provides doctoral students with competencies and knowledge in the areas of condensed matter, the interaction of radiation and matter, optical spectroscopy; the program offers a wide range of topics and general experimental and theoretical research in the areas of meso, micro, and nanostructures, photonic structures, including their formation, analysis and application in plasmonics, biosensors and alternative energy.

The PhDs in Science and Engineering are consolidated within the Doctoral School of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris which hosts around 900 doctoral students, supervised by more than 800 researchers. The Department, like almost all physics departments in Italy, lives in symbiosis with the most important Italian research organizations (CNR, INFN, INAF, ...). Its activity is also in close connection with the LENS (European Laboratory of Non-Linear Spectroscopy): an infrastructure of excellence, unique in Italy, which is also located on the campus.

Ph.D. track is a five-year integrated Master and Ph.D. Program aimed at high-potential undergraduate students who know from the Master’s level that they wish to commit to a scientific Ph.D. Ph.D. The track offers students a selective and personalized curriculum, training periods at laboratories, and the opportunity to focus gradually on their thesis subject. This pathway provides a springboard for tackling future scientific challenges in research and development centers of companies and major universities.
