The Physics Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown offers both a bachelor of science in natural sciences with a concentration in physics and a minor in physics. Students who wish to relocate to the Pittsburgh-Oakland campus to earn a BS in physics may complete their introductory, elective, and laboratory courses in physics on the Johnstown campus.

In this specialist route available in our BSc (Honours) Natural Sciences (Q64), you’ll develop the knowledge and skills you need to explore the smallest and largest scales of the Universe. You’ll be able to objectively and quantitatively describe, analyse, test and explain phenomena in the physical world, using appropriate mathematical tools and experimental methods.

The pre-med program in physics fulfills the admission requirements for medical, dental, or veterinary school while providing in-depth training in the physical sciences. Premedical physics students build a strong foundation in mathematics, biology, and chemistry, and take specialized courses in modern physics, biochemistry, physical mechanics, and quantum mechanics.

The study program in BSc in Physics for the full-time training offers a complete education in physics, with special directions particularly in IT in physics and Applied physics (with a strong emphasis on laser physics). The curriculum is organized in modules covering the Introductory courses in nature sciences (24 credits) and Common courses (52 credits) for all physics students (basic courses in mathematics, physics and informatics).

At JMU, our physics majors have the opportunity to customize their degree programs to suit their interests and career goals. We offer courses that focus on multiple facets of physics, including materials science, computational physics, electronics, and applied nuclear physics. Students are strongly urged to conduct research projects with our faculty, and often present research at professional conferences and produce co-authored publications. Additionally, there are multiple opportunities within the physics and astronomy department for paid research experience.

Physics (Bachelor)

The Physics Programme offers a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. The training focuses on the areas of Renewable Energy and Environment, Electronics and Communications, and Pure Physics. Students have a choice to pursue their BSc degree in Physics as a Single Major, Double Major, or Minor. The School also offers graduate courses in many areas of specialization.

The Bachelor of Science in Physics program prepares students for careers in education, business, or industry, where analytical skills and scientific background are advantageous, or for graduate school in physics or related areas. The degree can be earned without a concentration, or if desired, with a concentration in Applied and Engineering Physics, Astrophysics, or Computational Physics.
