The Master’s Degree Programme in Physics provided by the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is a two-year (120 ECTS) full-time programme taught in English. Applications for this master's degree programme can be submitted once a year in January, and once accepted, your studies will begin in September. From this programme, you will graduate with a Master of Science degree.

The Master of Science by Coursework and Thesis - MSc will take you between two and two and half years of full-time study or up to four years part-time. Master of Science in Ocean and Climate Physics. The Institute of Oceanography (IfM) at Universität Hamburg offers an international master's program (MSc) in Physical Oceanography and Climate Physics. This research-oriented four-semester program is directed to students with a B.Sc. degree in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Geophysics, Physics, or an equivalent subject and provides profound knowledge of the physics of the ocean and its role in the climate system.

The Master of Physics, with a strong focus on Nanophysics, is unique for its focus on the fundamental physics of the exciting phenomena in nanosystems. The programme focuses on modern theoretical models and computational techniques, electron microscopy and spectroscopy for the characterisation of nanostructures and practical computational and experimental experience.

Complement the Bachelor in Engineering Physics, Physics or other applied Physics/Engineering Physics formation, with advanced contents in Condensed Matter Physics and Nano-sciences; Photonics and Optoelectronics; and with a reasonable number of elective courses that allow students to choose part of their formation track. These elective courses may be chosen in the principal subject of the Program or in complementary areas like Mathematics, Mechanical and Electrotechnical Engineering, Chemistry, Management.

The Master's Degree in Physics is especially aimed at Graduates in Physics and Graduates of the double Degree in Physics and Mathematics. It is also aimed at graduates from other related areas, such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Engineering or Biotechnology. This master degree is oriented towards research and a potential doctorate. It is structured in three specialties that are among some of the most active branches in present day Physics, taught by experienced professors and researchers from the research groups that investigate on the following topics: Physics of the Atmosphere and Climate, Physics of Materials and Mathematical Physics.

The curriculum consists of a dissertation that incorporates a research proposal to be completed within the first year of study

The Master’s Degree in Physics and Laser Technology is a joint Master degree with the University of Salamanca (area of Optics, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Fundamental Physics), the University of Valladolid (area of Optics from the Department of Theoretical Physics, Atomic Physics, and Optics and the Group of Semiconductors from the Department of Physics of Condensed Matter, Crystallography and Mineralogy, Department of Signal Theory and Communications and Telematics Engineering) and the Center for Ultra-short and Ultra-intense Pulsed Laser (CLPU). This master's degree is aimed at training specialists in lasers in general, but with special attention to the high-power field and ultra-short pulses. Although it has an eminently practical focus, it also includes an important component on the theoretical foundations of applied optics.

Master of Science in Physics is an appropriate bachelor's honours degree in Physics with an average of 60% or an equivalent with a minimum of 96 credits at NQF level 8 with an average of 60%. All students with foreign qualifications, including those with qualifications from African countries, must have their qualifications evaluated at SAQA.

Our internationally recognized faculty lead students in searches for the dark matter of the universe, studies of the nature of the neutrino and the origin of the chemical elements, as well as research into condensed matter, e.g. phase transitions in ferroelectric and magnetic materials or quantum materials.
