The main objective of the master's degree in Advanced Microbiology is to provide students with the academic and technical training that will enable them to embark on a research career in this field or to gain employment as microbiologists. In addition, it focuses particularly on providing students with comprehensive multidisciplinary training, attaching special importance to experimental work in clinical laboratories, universities or research centres under the supervision of a lecturer or specialist (this accounts for a third of the total credit load)
Microbiology is a core discipline across all areas of specialization related to biotechnology, biomedical sciences and environmental sciences, as microorganisms play an essential role in the transformations of organic matter, in geochemical changes and in the production of diseases, in both humans and animals. As such, microbiology is of fundamental importance to industry and to the food, environment and health sectors.

The aim of the Master of Advanced Microbiology is to train students academically and technically to be able to start a research in the Microbiology area or to develop a professional work, as microbiologist, in the industry, services, healthcare and education sectors, as well as in public or private research centres. The Masters program impinges especially in a comprehensive and multidisciplinary training of students. The main elements of the program are as follows:
- Provide training in basic, methodological and applied knowledge of microbiology to holders of bachelor's degrees and equivalent university degrees, and to professionals in healthcare, environment, food industry, pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology.
- Provide a scientific foundation and methodological skills required to begin a doctoral thesis as well as the training to pursue a basic or applied research.
- Train specialists in advanced aspects of microbiology that could be used in different biotechnological, healthcare and environment process of specialized companies
