Study in Wales: A Guide for International Students

Wales is a unique corner of the UK that is home to more castles per square mile than anywhere else in the world. You might have seen the Welsh flag, with the red dragon, or perhaps you have heard of the distinctive language, or you’re an avid rugby fan! From the chanting crowds in the Principality Stadium on a rugby match day to the six UNESCO World Heritage sites, there’s something for everyone who studies in Wales.

Wales is a diverse and cosmopolitan place. A country with a strong international outlook, thanks to its long-standing educational, business, and cultural links with nations and regions all over the world. There are established expat communities in Wales from many countries, with Indian, Irish, and Chinese making up the largest groups.

Equality and diversity are at the heart of the Welsh community, there’s a history of supporting those from minority groups. The famous “Pride Cymru” that centers on ‘The Big Weekend’ in Cardiff is an example of this. It’s a gaudy, heady mix of music and street parades, with the rainbow flag flying proud from Cardiff Castle and all over the capital.

Wales is a nation where learning is valued and academic standards are high. As part of the UK higher-education system, all eight universities offer qualifications that are respected by academics and employers across the world. Our undergraduate degrees can be completed in three years, and postgraduate degrees in a year.

Welsh universities are modern and innovative, but their history goes back a long way. Higher education in Wales began in 1822, when St David’s College, Lampeter, opened its doors.
