The Greek higher education system offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees. All 24 public universities are accredited by the Greek government. Greece has not only public, but also private universities, often referred to as colleges. However, Greek law doesn't allow these private college institutions from calling themselves universities. Colleges are still allowed to cooperate with foreign universities and offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs. These are mostly taught in English.
How long is a Bachelor’s degree in Greece?
The duration of Bachelor's degrees for the majority of programs is four years, except for programs in medicine, dentistry or engineering that take five or six years to complete. Upon graduation, a student is awarded their degree.
In order to be accepted onto a Bachelor’s program in Greece, you should prove that neither themselves nor their parents have Greek nationality or citizenship. The candidates submit their documents to the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and also fill in an application entry form, stating which university programs they would like to attend.
All undergraduate programs are taught in Greek and a foreign student must prove their knowledge of Greek in their application. You can do this by submitting a Greek language qualification from a Greek public university. You can also sit the KPG national language exam.
The Greek education grading system for all degree levels is based on a numerical scale of 1-10. A student should achieve a score of at least five and above for passing a course. Grades between 8,5-10 rank for excellent (Άριστα), from 6,5-8,49 for very good (Λίαν Καλώς) and from 5-6,49 for good (Καλώς). The Greek higher education system is based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), meaning that you also earn credits for each course that you study.
Master's Studies in Greece
Master’s degrees lead to an award of Postgraduate Diploma of Specialization (Μεταπτυχιακό) and range from one to two years. In the last few years, more and more programs are offered in English as well. A student can have the option of choosing whether to study in English or Greek.
As for the selection criteria and admission requirements for a Master’s degree, that include among others oral and/or written examination, interviews and proof of English language knowledge. You can prove this through the TOEFL® iBT test.
Keep in mind that Greece doesn’t accept three-year Bachelor’s university degrees, so the student aiming to apply for a Master’s degree is required to attend additional courses upon their acceptance to the program.
What about Doctorate Studies?
Doctorate studies (Διδακτορικό) take around five to six years. In order to be eligible for Doctorate studies in Greece, a student must have obtained a Master’s degree beforehand, as well as the right number of European Transfer Credits. Doctorate studies mostly include research courses and a thesis. Each university department publishes its own admission requirements for a Doctorate degree every year, so check before applying.
