Study in Greece: Application Process

Excited to study in Greece? The application process for Greek universities includes multiple steps. Take into account that the following steps can work as an initial guide for you, as each university might follow their own application process rules, so make sure you will consult their official websites to make sure none of the important documents are missing.

1. Choose the program you wish

Begin by choosing the degree that suits you. What is your passion? Which are your strengths and what professional path do you want to follow? Choose your Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree wisely, while being alert for the requirements of each program and university.

2. Check the admission requirements

Depending on the university and academic level of the degree, there are some requirements. Dedicate time on reading the curriculum of your desired study program and consult the university’s official website for information. For questions and clarifications, don’t hesitate to contact them on time.

3. Prepare all the necessary documents

After making a list of the programs you wish to apply for, pay attention to the particular documentation requirements. Make sure your passport is valid, take language tests if necessary, prepare carefully your personal documents translations into Greek and even start practicing on writing your letter of motivation. Moreover, get an Apostille Convention stamp for all the documents from the official authorities of your country. Next step is to get approval from the Greek embassy of your country or the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

4. Submit your application

After you have gathered all the necessary documents, make sure to contact the Greek university of your choice before you submit your application. The application process for Greek universities can be bureaucratic and procedures can take time. A lot of universities only accept online applications, while others prefer the more traditional way of applying through post, with all the documents printed.

Check if there is a fee requirement upon application and don’t forget that all Greek universities start their academic year in September, so submit your application on time and not last minute. If you submit your application electronically through the Ministry of Education, remember that the deadline is around the middle of July every year. The results are announced in August.

5. Apply for a Greek study visa/residence permit

If you get in, then the acceptance letter will be sent to you with all the necessary information you need to know before your arrival. Now it's also time to prepare the first deposit of your tuition fees. Start the visa and residence permit paperwork as soon as possible, by consulting the Greek embassy of your home country for guidance. European citizens are not required to have a visa or residence permit, however.

6. Arrive in Greece

After your visa and residence permit is approved, it’s finally time to book your tickets and start looking for accommodation. Pack your bags, immerse yourself and be open to a life-changing experience in sunny and welcoming Greece. It's all only an application away.
