The Greek Language

The Greek language is considered one of the oldest written languages in the world. In fact, the richness and uniqueness of the Greek language make it a difficult language to learn, but learning gives you access to a unique culture and heritage.

So, what do you say? Are you interested in impressing your friends and family by learning a challenging and special language?

The majority of Greek universities and a variety of non-profit institutions offer elementary and advanced courses in the Greek language to international students, with the aim to promote the values of the Greek language. Through them, you are able to get a Greek language certification and be eligible to apply for the Greek National Foreign Language Exam System (KPG) which can certify your language level. You can also start learning Greek even before your arrival and get a diploma or certificate in the Greek language!

Greek Culture

As for contemporary Greek culture, a student can has the opportunity to take a dive into a historical and gastronomic experience like no other.

No matter where your university is based, Greece is full of archaeological sites and museums that can take you back to Ancient or Byzantine Greece and teach you lessons that will accompany you for a lifetime.

If you study in Athens, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the breathtaking Acropolis Museum. If you study in Thessaloniki and in the north, make sure you will learn more about Alexander the Great, by visiting the Museum of The Royal Tombs at Aegae in Vergina.

As for food, Greek cuisine is well known for dishes like gyro, moussaka, horiatiki salad or tzatziki spread, which despite being traditional ones, are still enjoyed all over Greece.

Greek cuisine is characterized by rich flavors and big portions. Imagine taking a break from your studies to eat at a local taverna restaurant among friends, with a company of traditional music and a relaxed atmosphere. The essence of the modern Greek culture is found in the simple and small stuff in life: going out with friends, enjoying great food, relaxation under the sun and no worries!

Greece is also famous for its local and pretty strong drinks. While eating out you will be able to taste ouzo, tsipouro, raki or tsikoudia from Crete, retsina from Thessaloniki, or a great variety of wines, especially from the Peloponnese and Cyclades island region.

Did you know that in Greece there are also drinks made from gum? Yes, chewing gum! The island of Chios is globally famous for producing natural gum from trees that have been on the island for centuries. The local inhabitants produce the famous ‘’Mastiha drink’’, which will be an incredible opportunity to taste true Greek culture in a glass.
