Designed to reactivate your study skills and increase your readiness for graduate-level coursework, this course will prepare you for success in your academic pursuits. You’ll develop practical techniques and effective strategies for communicating in a fast-paced environment, navigating an American classroom environment, and working with large amounts of information.

Designed for working professionals and university graduates, the Intensive Professional English program offers opportunities to refine your English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The Language Department at Lane Community College offers courses in French, Spanish, and American Indian Languages. The specialization program is designed for Middlebury Institute students who are pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching Foreign Language and who want to add a TESOL specialization to their coursework so that they are also eligible to teach English. Students pursuing other Institute degree programs can also choose to add a TESOL specialization to their coursework to provide broader professional expertise and additional career avenues in language education and curriculum design.

Blue Ridge Community College is one of only four Interpreter Education Programs in North Carolina. It is designed to prepare individuals to work as entry-level sign language interpreters who will provide communication access in interview and interactive settings. Additionally, this curriculum provides in-service training for currently working interpreters who want to enhance their skills. The Interpreter Education Program curriculum includes coursework that covers the acquisition of American Sign Language (ASL). It encompasses ASL grammar, structure, syntax, history, and its sociolinguistic properties. Students will also learn the cognitive processing skills needed for interpreting between ASL and English in consecutive and simultaneous settings. Along with learning ASL and how to interpret, students will gain a greater knowledge of the Deaf community through classes as well as real-life interactions with their local Deaf community.

The Certificate Program for Adult Non-Native Speakers of English is specifically tailored to support individuals in furthering their English language proficiency for effective communication across diverse settings. Geared towards adult learners who are non-native speakers of English, this program offers targeted instruction to enhance proficiency in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills at the low advanced level.
