The Bachelor of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is designed for students who want to engage with international populations in the US or abroad. It is rooted in a desire to communicate with people from different languages and cultural backgrounds from the dual perspective of teachers who wish to serve international sojourners in the US and those who want to journey abroad to engage with students in their home cultures.

The concentration in Korean prepares students to perform professional work in the field of translation, international relations, local and federal government, transnational enterprise, cultural industry, and teaching careers in Korea or at local public schools and to pursue graduate studies in Korean or Korean studies. The concentration in Korean has an emphasis on developing solid Korean language proficiency skills, technical translation skills, and an in-depth understanding of both South and North Korean society and culture.

The Classics Studies, Greek and Latin program is designed to provide thorough and rigorous training in ancient Greek and Latin, the principal languages and literatures of the ancient Mediterranean world and beyond. Our majors have found doors for them in a variety of fields: teaching, scholarship (including PhD work in Classics Studies, archaeology, etc.), and careers of all sorts.

The concentration in Spanish provides opportunities to study the Spanish language as well as Latin American, Latinx, and Spanish cultures, film studies, linguistics, and literature. Study abroad and service-learning opportunities are also available. Students in the Spanish concentration can apply to the Accelerated MA program, which allows them to begin graduate study while still completing their BA and to earn a BA AND an MA in as little as five years.

The concentration in Chinese prepares students for teaching careers at the secondary school level, graduate study in Chinese, and research and professional work in government and private enterprises. Language majors with Chinese concentration are encouraged to complete a minor or, if possible, a second major in another field.

The concentration in French provides students with the opportunity to study traditional academic fields like language, literature, and the culture of French and less traditional subjects such as film studies and the Francophone literature of the Caribbean, Quebec, and Africa. This unique combination leads to a well-rounded liberal arts education that allows students to experience the full spectrum of the Francophone world.

The concentration in Arabic has an emphasis on developing strong language skills, including literacy and oral communication, along with an in-depth understanding of modern Arabic culture and society. Students concentrating in Arabic are expected to gain fluency in Modern Standard Arabic and a working knowledge of at least one Arabic dialect. Additionally, students will graduate with a strong background in Arab intellectual history, literature, and culture.

Our interdisciplinary German Studies curriculum offers a diverse range of courses in language, literature, and culture. The program emphasizes the study of culture in the broadest sense and offers an international approach to education through recognized study-abroad programs in Leipzig, Germany, and Graz, Austria. Courses on topics from intellectual and cultural history to literary studies to linguistics and visual culture are designed to allow students to follow their passions, develop their intellectual curiosity, and pursue their interests with rigor and depth.

As the second largest spoken language in the United States and in the world, Spanish plays a key role in superior education. The Spanish major provides students with a strong foundation in oral and written communication, as well as solid training in textual and cultural analysis.

The Department of English, General Literature, and Rhetoric provides students the opportunity to study literature and language in their many manifestations. In addition to an English major, the department offers coursework in globalization and culture. Literature courses provide undergraduates with a foundation in literary history as well as an opportunity to explore a variety of genres while fostering critical reading and research skills.

An English degree from NSU teaches valuable skills that transfer easily across disciplines and careers. King University's online bachelor's in English is designed for those pursuing secondary education careers; however, you will develop skills that apply to many industries. Practice leadership, communication, analysis, and problem-solving to work in editing, freelance writing, library science, publishing, public relations, government service, and more.

Versatile and enriching, the English major is a vibrant part of the liberal arts at Siena Heights. Siena Heights’ unique curriculum provides students with a breadth of courses in literature, literary and cultural theory, and writing. Our English major offers concentrations in Literary Studies and Secondary English Education.

The Siena Heights Spanish program doesn’t want its students to just “learn” Spanish; students will be able to speak it. In fact, students will start speaking Spanish on their very first day of class. The program features a “flipped” classroom format, meaning the grammar is no longer taught in the classroom but as an online lecture.

The Latin program is designed to provide thorough and rigorous training in ancient Latin. Majors may leverage the training this major provides toward advancement in a variety of fields, including teaching. (Majors of ours have gained admission to Master of Arts in Teaching [MAT] programs in Latin.)
