The Master's program in Ecology and Evolution leads to the degree of a Master of Science (M Sc) in Ecology and Evolution. The program is run jointly by the Institute of Ecology and Evolution and the Institute of Plant Sciences of the Science Faculty. The Master's program in Ecology and Evolution is regulated in the Master's curriculum (Studienplan) in Ecology and Evolution (MSc EE) and is fully taught in English. The Master's program has a workload of 90 ECTS points. 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of work. The program can be completed by full-time students in 3 semesters. It consists of 60 ECTS in form of a Master's thesis and 30 ECTS in formal learning units.

The Master of Science in Medical Biology degree is intended for students who are interested in biological research in the medical field. This Master's program focuses on the acquisition of key areas of expertise necessary for the development of new pre-clinical and clinical medical applications. This training gives students an in-depth knowledge of basic cellular functions, systems that transmit signals inside and among cells, human biology, and the normal and pathological functioning of the most important systems of the human organism.

The Master of Science in Biology offers a program that permits students to select their area of specialization and acquire a diverse range of transferable skills.

Training focused on the acquisition of the skills necessary for the development of new preclinical and clinical medical applications, with lessons on the normal and pathological functioning of the large systems of the human organism. Much emphasis is placed on learning techniques used in medical biology. There are three specialization streams: “Immunology and cancer”, “Neurosciences” and “Pharmacology and toxicology”.

The Specialized Master’s degree program in Infection Biology at the University of Basel is run by the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), an internationally recognized center for public health excellence. Infection biology focuses on host-pathogen interactions and aims to understand the mechanisms through which viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites colonise their hosts and cause disease. Infection biologists study molecular, cellular, metabolic, or immunological aspects of pathogen biology and infection, try to elucidate mechanisms and evolution of drug resistance and immune evasion, or investigate dynamics of transmission and infection in the field. Knowledge gained from studying these and other aspects of infection biology provides the basis for the development of novel diagnostic tools, drugs, and vaccines for improved prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.
